UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. o
CHARLES L. HOLLAND, OF REVERE, MASSACHUSETTS.
nAzon-srnoe.`z
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,184, dated February 24, 1891.
Application filed November 5 1889. Serial No. 329,306. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES L. HOLLAND,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Revere, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Razor Strops, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in razor-strops, and itis carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, Wherein.-
Figure l represents a perspective view of the improved razor-strop. Fig. 2represents across-section on the line X X shown in Fig. l, and Fig. 3 represents a detail perspective view of the knit or woven tube or hose that forms a part of the invention.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
The improved strop consists of the central wooden core a, having in one end the handle a', as usual. On the two opposite sides of the said core a are arranged, as usual, the yielding cushions b b, held in position, as shown in Fig. 2, by means of paper or other envelopes c c, glued or otherwise secured to the core o, in the ordinary manner. Around the body so formed I place a seamless tube d, knitted or woven from cotton, linen, or other textile or fibrous material, which seamless Woven tube is drawn tightly over the cushioned core of the strop, as shown in the drawings.
In practice I cover one side of the seamless tube with a soft leather sheet e, (shown in Fig. 2,) which serves as a finishing-surface in stropping the razor or blade.
The exposed part of the seamless knitted or woven tube or envelope d is filled with cement or other suitable filling material, for the purpose of producing the desired stropping-surface combined with the woven or knitted tube d. Such impregnated or filled textile or fibrous material possesses in a high degree the proper qualifications desired in a strop for sharpening razors or other edged tools.
In using the improved strop, the tool to be sharpened is first drawn forward and back on the prepared knitted or woven material d, and afterward on the soft leather e, by which a keen edge is quickly obtained.
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a razor-strop consisting of a flattened corepiece having the yielding cushions secured to.
its opposite sides and inclosed by a seamless woven tube of fibrous material coextensive with the length of the cushions on the corepiece, and having its meshes filled with cem.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 28th day of October, A. D. 1889.
CHARLES L. HOLLAND.
