UNITED STATES PATENT FFrcn.
JOHN H. STEVENS, F LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUFFING -MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,481, dated December 27, 1881,
Application filed September 2, 1881.
' Lynn, Essex county, State of Massachusetts,
have invented an Improvement in Buffing-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to buffing-machines, and is intended as an improvement on a portion of the apparatus invented by me for which Letters Patent No. 236,271 were granted J anuary 4, 1881. l
The present invention consists in a novel means of attaching the foot and abrasive facing or pad to the rotating spindle, and in a novel form of abrasive facing for the said foot. The spindle to which the foot is attached is provided with an axial passage to receive a rod passed through a central hole, and provided at one end witha head to engage the foot, which may be constructed essentially as in my former invention. The said rod extends entirely through the spindle, and is provided at its other end with a thumb-nut or equivalentmeans to draw it longitudinally through the spindle, and thus clamp the foot between its head and the end of the spindle. The abrasive face ofthe disk, instead of being made as a pouch, as in my former invention, is molded to fit the surface of the foot, and is placed thereon before the foot-holding rod is inserted into the spindle, the said abrasive face being thus held upon the foot by the said rod.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a portion of a buffing apparatus embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a section of a molded abrasive facing therefor on a larger scale.
The spindle a, which may be mounted and rotated by a pulley, b substantially as in my former application, is provided with a central longitudinal passage to receive the foot-holding rod 0, provided with a head, d, to engage and clamp the foot e, which may be and is shown substantially asin my former patent, upon the spindle a, a washer, f, at the end of the said spindle affording a seat or shoulder to receive the said foot. The foot-holding rod 0 extends wholly through the spindle a, and is shown as serew-threadedat 2 to receive a thumb-nut, g, by which it is drawn through the spindle to cause its head (I to properly secure the foot 6.
(No model.)
The abrasive facing h is provided with a central opening, 3, for the foot-holding rod 0, by the head d of which it is, held in place upon the foot 6 and caused to rotate with the said foot and spindle.
In order to prevent the surface of the facing from being made uneven bythepressureof the head d, it is molded by pressure to properly fit the foot e, and a depression,i,is made therein to. receive the said head (I.
As shown in Fig. 1, the facing h, when molded, is provided with a flange, h, which fits upon the periphery of the foot 6 and increases the stiffness of the facing h, preventing it from wrinkling or becoming doubled up when actin g upon the leather to be buffed.
The facing h may be conveniently made by mounting the usual emery paper or cloth of commerce by glue upon adisk of thick tough paper, as shown in Fig. 2, and before the said glue is wholly set or hardened subjecting the facing to the pressureof a dieproperly shaped for the purpose, the facing being laid upon a bed of yielding material or in a matrix corresponding to the die. Any abrasive facing constructed in this manner has sufficient stifiness and elasticity, and is for many purposes more convenient than the abrasive pouches shown in my former invention, although it is obvious that-such a pouch may be conveniently used with a foot attached to the spindle, as herein shown.
The herein-described molded abrasive facing might be attached with the foot 0 t0 the spindle by a screw, as shown in the former patent referred to.
I claim- 1. In a buffing-machine, the combination, with the foot and its abrasive facing, of theactuatingspindle provided with a longitudinal passage, and a foot-attaching rod extending wholly through the said spindle-passage, it being provided at one end with a head to engage the said foot and at the other end with means to draw the said head toward the said spindle to 5 tral hole and deprcssi0n,to enable it, with the In testimony whereoflhave signed my name 10 said foot, to be attached to the spindle, substanto this specification in the presence of two subtially as set forlh. scribing witnesses.
3. The hereindescribed abrasive facing for buffing-machines, it consisting of a stifiening- JOHN H. STEVENS. disk provided on its surface with an abrasive material, and properly molded to fin and be at- Witnesses: tached to the foot of thebufling-machine, sub- Jos. P. LIVERMORE, stantially as described. W. H. SIGSTON.
