ATTORNEYS p UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES XV. FISHEL AND FRANK E. SWTEET, OF CARBONDALE, COLORADO.
PAPER BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,771, dated February 17, 1891.
Application filed September 23, 1890- Serial No. 365,903. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES \V. FISHEL and FRANK E. SWEET, both of Carbondale, in the county of Garfield and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Paper Bag, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of an improved paper bag, showing it in condition for filling. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, showing the mouth of the bag partly closed; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the bag closed and tied.
The object of our invention is to provide a paper bag for theuse of grocers and others, which may be quickly closed and securely fastened.
Our invention consists in the combination, with a paper bag of ordinary form, of an apron attached to one side thereof and a string furnished with a loop at one end and passing through holes in the apron, all as hereinafter more fully described.
To one side of the bag A, which is of ordinaryform and construction, is attached the apron B by one of its ends, said apron eX- tending along the side of the bag and terminating at'the mouth thereof. The apron B is provided near its opposite ends with holes a, for receiving the string or cord 1), which is fixed to the bag at one end by the fixed end of the apron B and by the glue or paste which secures the said apron to the bag. The fixed end of the cord 1) is provided with a loop 6 for receiving the free end when the bag is tied. After the bag is filled the mouth is closed by throwing over the upper edges of the bag in the usual Way, as shown in Fig. 2. Then the folded edges, together with the apron B, are bent down over the filled portion of the bag, as shown in Fig. 3. The free end of the cord b is passed through the loop 6 and tied in an ordinary loop-knot, as shown. The bag thus fastened can be readily opened without breaking the string or the bag.
Our improvement effects a great saving of wrapping-twine and in the time required for doing up packages. It can be added to the ordinary paper bag with very little expense.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A bag provided with a flap having apertures near its ends and with a cord secured to the bag at the fixed end of the flap and passed through the apertures of the said flap, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the bag A, the apron B, provided with holes a a and attached to the bag at one end, and a looped string 1), secured at one end to the bag and passing through the holes of the apron, substantially as specified.
