To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PERCY HARRY Sneaonax'r, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Hillbrook, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to CarrierBags, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to carrier bags, that is to say to bags made of paper or similar material and provided with means such as string, cord or tape by which they may be carried in the manner of an ordinary bag.

The invention relates to the known kind of carrier bag in which coincident holes are formed in the flap and the sides of the bag and through the strengthening or reinforcing strips applied thereto through which the string, cord or tape returns for closing and carrying the According to the invention the coincident holes referred to. which are formed in the flap and sides of the bag and in the strengthening or reinforcing strips applied thereto, are provided at their upper part of an angula r shape and are disposed below the holes or notches from which the string, cord or tape passes as hereinafter more particularly described.

The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front View of a paper bag provided according to the invention.

Figs. i and 5 show a modification in which sides of the bag are co-extensive and are bent near the upper end to form four thicknesses of paper, in addition to the strengthening or reinforcing pieces, through which the string, cord or tape may pass.

According to the invention in its application to a paper bag of a form similar to that of an envelop, that is with the flap extending over the opening as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, I provide upon the flap a a strengthening or reinforcing piece 0. A similar strengthening piece 0 is secured to the back of the bag. These respective strengthening or reinforcing pieces are advantageously provided of the same size and in coincident positions of paper cardboard or like material.

The strengthening or reinforcing pieces c c are pasted or otherwise applied to the material of the bag and the binding string, cord or tape (Z is permanently secured in position or in part secured by being engaged between one of the reinforcing pieces 0 0 and the material of the bag. A hole 6 is formed through the liap a and in coincident positions in the respective front and back walls I) b of the bag, the hole 0 being advantageously formed of angular shape at its upper part so that thus the tying strin cord or tape (Z when applied on the flap a may pass through the hole 6 formed in the flap and through the coincident holes 0 in the walls 7) of the bag, the string cord or tape (I passing upwardly at the back of the bag being held within the end of the angular part of the coincident holes 0 as illustrated in Fig. 1.

The strengthening or reinforcing pieces 0 0 may be provided in one piece of two symmetrical. parts, one of which 0 is applied on the flap o and and the other on the back wall .7) of the bag. The front part 0 is provided with two holes f 7 (Figs. 1 and 2) or with two notches f (Fig. 4) near the edge through which the tying string, cord or tape (Z may pass, these notches f 7 being disposed in a position above the upper angular end of the hole 6 so that thus in closing the bag the two ends of the tying string, cord or tape (Z pass downwardly through the hole 6, thence coming out through the back 6 of the bag, the string passing upwardly so that the bag may thus be suspended from the end of the string, cord or tape that is held in the hand.

By such means the bag and its contents can be held by the string without liability of the bag opening and such a bag can be inexpensively produced while moreover the bag and its contents may be held without liability of the upper part of the bag to pucker under the strain imposed by the weight of its contents.

I claim:

1. In a carrier bag, a closure flap there for, a perforated reinforcing piece on the front of said flap and a coincident one on the rear of said bag, and a closing and supporting cord adapted to be passed through said perforations, the free ends of said cord being brought near each other and perinanently secured under one of said reinforcing pieces.

2. In a carrier bag, a closure flap therefor, a reinforcing piece therefor, said piece provided with an angular shaped perforation, on said flap, a corresponding reinforcing piece on the back of the bag, the perforations being made to be in registry With the angles upward, when the bag is closed, and a closing and supporting cord permanently secured under the bag reinforcing piece and between said piece and bag and adapted to be passed through said registering perforations from one side to the other of the bag.

piece, for the bag attached to the back of the bag, the two said reinforcing pieces being integral and continuous, there being angular shaped andregistering openings in said reinforcing'pieces, bag and flap, the flap reinforcing part being provided .With notches, and a holding and closing cord, the ends of said cord being passed through said notches from the front of the flap reinforcement and secured between said reinforcement and flap, and being adapted to be passed through said registering angular opening from front to back, when the bag is filled and closed, so as to provide a sustaining and carrying loop for the bag and its contents.
