5A Stahna. (Ci. 2ML-63) Our invention relates to millinery, notion, shopping and other bags and/or sacks, having closing flaps which are so arranged as to provide a handle for carrying the bag.

There have been a number of structures proposed, and some of them have gone into use for accomplishing in general the purpose of our invention. It is the object of our invention to improve on these devices, and among other things, to provide for a reinforced bag top and for a locking iiap which; when closed, will stay closed, and will not be disrupted by the fingers of the person carrying the bag.

By means of the structure to be` described, we place the strain of supporting the bag directly A'on the reinforcing element, and do`not call upon the nger holes in the bag itself for doing anyA of the work, either in yholding the locking tab in place, or sustaining the weight of the contents of the bag. Further, we do not have to distort the locking flap in any way when putting' it to use, and our bag is cheap and simple to manufacture. L

We accomplish our objects by that certain arrangement and construction of parts to be hereinafter set forth, it being understood that we have shown a preferred embodiment, and that in our claims we will set forth the novelty inherent in the structure described.

Figure 5 is a perspective taken from the same point of view as- Figures 3 and 4, but with the closing flap and locking ap turned upwardly. In the illustrated bag, a strip of material is folded on itself and glued at the sides to form a y to the wall of the bag at the unglued intermediate bag 1. Gne Lside of the sheet is made longer than the other, so as to form a closing iiap 2. Finger holes of suitable shape are formed at 3 in each of the walls of the bag. Secured by gluing to the top edge of that portion of the bag a@ which does not have a closing flap, is a reinforcing strip 4 of suitable weight.- The closing flap 2 is formed with a projection 5 to act as a locking flap; and preferably secured by pasting to the locking iiap and the closing flap, is a piece of heavier material 6 which may be scored,v

if desired, as at 7, to reinforce the locking iiap and the portions of the closing fiap adjacent thereto, and to bridge the top of the handle opening 3 in the closing flap section of the bag.

In operation, to close the bag the fiap 2 is bent over so as to overlie the reinforcing piece, as I shown in` Fgure 3, and the locking flap is then lturned upwardly so as to extend around the reinforcing piece 4, but not to extend through the 5 hand holes in the bag. To this end, the paste used in applying the reinforcing strip 4 terminates at 4a so that the strip 4 is not secured portion.

It will be evident that no distortion of the locking ap is necessary, nor any interference with folding, likely resulting in tearing out of the hand holes, in locking the bag after it is closed. The bag is supported by the reinforcing strip 4, and by the reinforcement 6 behind the closing and locking flaps, and the fingers of the user can pass through the holes 3 after the bag is closed and locked, grasping that portion of the reinforcing strip and locking element that lies across the finger holes 3.

2. A bag for the purpose described having a closing flap at one side thereof, and a locking ap. projecting from an intermediate portion of the closing ap, hand holes in the sides of the bag registering withthe locking flap, and a reinforcing strip secured to the top edgeof the bag opposite the closing ap and having an intermediate portion unsecured to the bag behind which the locking ap can be tucked, said reinforcing strip extending from one side to the other of the bag.

Al bag for the purpose described having a closing flap at one side thereof, anda locking ap projecting from an intermediate portion of the closing ap, hand holes in the sides of the beg registering with the locking ap, a. reinforcing strip secured to the top edge o the bag opposite the closing ap and having an intermediate portion unsecured to the bag behind which the locking iiap can be tucked, and a reinforcing piece secured to the closing flap and extending across the locking iiap.

4. A bag for the purpose described having a closing ap at one side thereof, and a locking ap projecting from an intermediate portion of the site the closing ap and having anintermediate portion unsecured to the bag behind which the locking flap can be tucked, said reinforcing strip extending from one side to the other oi the bag, and a reinforcing piece secured to the closing ap and extending across the locking ap.

5. A bag for the purpose described having a, closing ap Aet one side thereof, and e locking ap projecting from an intermediate portion 'of the closing ap, hand holes in the sides of the bag registering with the locking iap, and a reinforcing strip secured to the top edge of the bag opposite the closing iiap and having an intermediate portion unsecured to the bag behind which the locking flap can be tucked, said reinforcing strip extending at least along the edge directly opposite the locking ap.
