Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
`RASSELAS G. BURLINGAME, OF HARTFORD, MICHIGAN.
JAR-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,921, dated February 3, 1891.
Application filed August 27, 1890. Serial No. 363,235. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, RAssELAs G. BURLIN- GAME, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Van Buren and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Cover'for .l ars and other Vessels; and I do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which torni a part of this specification. i' )I y invention relates to an improven'ient in Jar-covers; and it consists in the combination and construction of parts, which will be fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a cover for hermetically sealing the mouths .of jars, having the construction hereinafter pointed out, and for the purpose specilied.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the upper portion of a jar, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cover detached. Fig. 3 1s a detached plan view showing the' hooks which are connected thereto in perspective. Fig. 4 is a detached plan view of one of the springs which are connected to the cover. Fig. 5 is a perspective of a modification in the form of the spring shown in Fig. L
A represents the upperportion of a jar; B, the cover, and C an annular packing-ring, of rubber, felt, or other suitable material, and which is preferably cemented to the said cover. Applied to the top of the cover is a suitable number of springs D, (preferably two,) and these springs are doubled, as shown, to form a loop E, the ends of the springs being formed into coils F, which have the eX tended ends G. It preferred, these extended ends may be provided wit-h the downwardlyextending points ll, as shown in Fig. 5, and which will be forced into the top of the cover. These springs are secured to the cover by means of the cross-bars I, which are secured to and extend across the upper face of the cover B.
A band .l passes around and closely iits the jar below the cover, and inserted between the ends of this band is a suitable spiral spring K, which allows the band to expand to lit jars of ditterent sizes, and also holds it in place upon the jar. Placed upon this band are the combined catches and hinges L M, which are provided with the loops N, through which the band passes. The one L has its lower end formed into a loop l), which forms a handle, and with the extending ends Q, which are slightly bent between their ends to prevent striking the jar, and these ends are formed into hooks R, which catch in the loop of one of the springs D.
The combined hook and catch lll has its doubled end bent into a hook S, as shown, which likewise catches in the loop of one of the springs D, and its extending ends T form handles by which it is manipulated. By means of this construction the catches are inserted into the loops of the springs D, and
the cover thereby held iirmly in place; and by detaching the catch L the cover can be raised at that end and turned back, the one M acting as a hinge, or the catch M may be detached and the catch L used as a hinge.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. In a cover-fastening, the combination of the cover, loops applied thereto which have their inner ends formed into springs, a band which passes around the jar, andl catches placed upon the band, which engage the outer ends of the said loops, substantially as described.
2. In a jar-'cover fastening, the combination of the cover, loops secured thereto consisting of` outer doubled port-ions, coils between their ends, and their inner ends bent to extend parallel with their double ends, a band which passes around the jar, and catches placed upon the band, which engage the outer-ends of the loops, substantially as set forth.
3. In ajarcoverfastening, the combination of the cover, loops secured thereto consisting of outer doubled portions, coils between their ends, theirinner ends extending substantially parallel with their front ends, and depending projections-at their inner ends, a band which passes around the jar, and Catches placed upon the main portion of the band, which upon the band, which engage lLhe outer ends engage the said loops, substantially as shown ro of the loops, substantially :Ls speoied. md described. Y 4. In L jar-f asteuingtho oo1nbiimtion,\vitl1 RASSELAS Gn BURLINGAME 5 the cover having loops applied thereto, Whloh have their inner ends formed into springs, of \Vitnesses: a band which passes around :L jm', :L spring` MAY CHADDOCK, placed between its ends, and catches placed XVILLIAM M..
