Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VALTER GREAGEN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM ROBOTHAM, OF SAME PLAGE.
GAG-SWIVEL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,579, dated Octobcr 4, 1864.
To all whom, t may concern/,-
Be it known that I, VALTER GREAGEN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Gag-Swivel; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming pa-rt of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of this invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.
Similar letters of, reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the application to a gag-runner of a simple button in place of the loop generally used to fasten the same in such a manner that when said button is passed through an appropriate hole in the head-strap itretains the gag'runner securely in place, and at the saine time allows the same to oscillate back and forth and to accommodate itself to the motions of the check-rein.
A represents a gag-runner, which is cast or otherwise produced of metal or any other suitable material. The front plate, a, is ornainented with suitable leaves, arabesques, or otL er designs, and, in order to give it a bright look and prevent it from getting tarnished, it may be plated with silver and polished, though for ordinary use the silver-plating and polishing may be omitted. The loop b, which supports the rein, is cast solid with the front plate and it terminates in a button, c, which serves to fasten the gag-swivel to the strap B. This strap is fastened to the horses head in the usual manner and it is provided with one or more holes, d, to receive the. button. li'
more holes are in the strap they serve to adjust the gag-swivel higher up or lower down, as the occasion may require. The button c is provided with a head, large enough to take a firm hold of the strap after it has been passed through the hole in the same, and its round shank allows the swivel to oscillate back and forth and to accommodate itself freely to the motions of the rein. In order to render the motions of the gag-swivel free, the hole cl ought to be punched out round and large enough to allow the shank of the but-ton free play, but not so large that the head of the button will pass through it. To enable the head to pass through, an incision is made in the strap from the round hole, as clearly shown in the drawings.
This gagswivel is superior to anything heretofore used, in simplicity, convenience, cheapness, and durability. It is much easier attached than the ordinary gag-runners which are provided with a loop through which the strap is passed and then fastened by means of a buckle, and, furthermore, an ordinary gag-runner, fastened by a loop, cannot accommodate itself to the motions of the rein.
My gag-swivel requires no buckle. It is readily attached and detached, and it forms a real swivel which accommodates itself readily to the motions of the rein.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The application of the button c, in combination with the loop b and plate a, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
WALTER GREACEN.
