Description
F. KREBSJ VISE CLAMP.
Patented Jan. 27,1891.
(No Model.)
M m M Maw i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND KREBS, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
VlSE-CLAMP SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,506, dated January 2'7, 1891. Application filed October 30, 1890. Serial No. 369,798. (No model.) Patented in GermanyEehrnary 20,1889, No. 48,794.
To ctZl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND KREBs, a subjectof the King of Prussia, residing at Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vise-Ulamps, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent of the German Empire, No. 48,794, dated February 20, 1889,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vise-clamps or screw-stocks; and the invention consists in the details of construction set forth in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a viseclamp. Fig. 2 shows the vise-clamp holding an object. Fig. 3 is a side view of a viseclamp with wooden cheek-pieces. Fig. 4 is a face view of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side view of a vise-clamp with metallic cheek-pieces. Fig. (3 is a face view of Fig. 5.
The frame of this clamp is made from malleable-iron casting. hen provided with wooden cheek-pieces m, Figs. 3 and e, the clamp is suitable for holding wooden objects, while the metallic cheek-pieces m, Figs. 5 and (i, serve for holding metallic objects. The clamp-heads are provided with conical or suitably shaped openings or recesses for the reception of the cheek-pieces, so that the cheek-pieces can be readily put in place or removed and renewed or repaired.
The clamps, Figs. 5 and 6, are intended for metallic objects and having steel cheekpieces held in place by screws n. The legs g it of the clamp are pivoted to one another independently of the legs i 7c, so that a space is left between the leg pairs for the reception of a long article as, for example, in Fig. 2, where a rod or bar of indefinite length is held in the clamp. The pivot a serves for one leg pair and the pivot 19 for the other. The clamp can be held in its closing position by a spring Z, secured at one side or the other of the device. By enabling the clamp to receive and hold articles of indefinite length it supplies a long-felt want. By providing the legs with knee-joints cf, Figs. 5 and 6, the clampingfaces can be placed or adjusted so as to obtain an exact parallel hold on the object in the clamp, so that said object is firmly held.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A vise-clamp consisting of two clamp-heads, each provided with two independent and separated legs, the independent pivots connecting the lower ends of one pair of legs to the lower ends of the other pair, for providing an unobstructed space between the pivots and legs which permits the insertion of long articles vertically between the clamp heads, and means for closing the clamp-heads, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
