UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY FRIDAY, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
FENCE OR GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,960, dated J anuary 20, 1891. Application filed September 24., 1889. Serial No. 324,877. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY FRIDAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented a new and usefulFence or Gate, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in fences and gates.
The object of the present invention is to provide a fence or gate of simple and inexpensive construction adapted to be readily put together.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the couplings. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A A designate hinge and latch posts, between which is arranged a gate. The gate and fence are both composed of horizontal bars D, long pickets O, and short pickets 0, arranged between the long pickets. The bars D are arranged at the top, bottom, and middle of the fence and gate, and the pickets are connected to the middle and top bars D by couplings D in the form of a Greek cross and to the bottom bar by T-shaped couplings D Each couplingis formed of a pair of separable members of similar size and shape, which have on their inner sides semi-cylindrical or other suitablyshaped recesses G, adapted to receive the meeting ends or portions of the pipes or rods to form angles therein. These members are provided with transverse openlngs H, which align with each other and are placed near the angle or at the junction of the arms dot the coupling. By this construction of the members of the coupling and the arrangement of the transverse openings approximately at the junction of the arms 01 a bolt I, which passes through the said opening H and is provided with a suitable nut K, may securely clamp the members of the coupling around the ends of the pipes or rods without passing through the latter and necessitating perforations for that purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A fence or gate composed entirely of pipes interchangeably connected together by couplings, and consisting of the long tubular pickets O and the intermediate short tubular pickets, each long tubular picket being formed by two short tubular pickets connected by an intermediate coupling in the form of a Greek cross, a similar coupling at the top of each long and short tubular picket, and the T- shaped couplings at their bottoms, combined with a series of horizontal tubes, the horizontal tubes and tubular pickets being respectively composed of pipes of the same length, the couplings being all of the same size and each composed of two similar sections connected by bolts passing through the sections between the horizontal tubes and the ends of the vertical tubes of the pickets, and all the parts being interchangeable and adapted to be removed and replaced, substantially as de' scribed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afliXed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY PRI DAY. Witnesses:
JAMES CHARLTON, JOHN HENRY FRIDAY.
