UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CHRISTIAN C. FUNK, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
SEWER-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,747, dated January 13, 1891.
Application led December 26, 1889- Seral No. 335,015. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN C. FUNK, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county ot' Clark and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewer-Traps, of which the following is a full and clear description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to sewer-traps, and more especially to hinging or pivoting the valve of the same; and it consists in constructing a valve with a hinge of such a shape as may be easily cast with the valve and applied to the trapbox in such a way that when once placed in position sewage matter passing through the trap cannot dislocate the valve or impair its efficiency.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing the valve closed in full and open in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side view of same. Fig.4 3 is a section through the center, and Fig. 4 is a modication in the application of the hinge.
The letter a designates the box of the trap, which is fiat on top and bottom for the purpose of building a square wall around the same, and inclined on top and bottom of the outlet or valve side. The valve ot is provided with hinges a2, which are cast with the valve a and forms the -prime feature of my invention. The hinge a2 is provided with an L- shaped slot CL3, one portion being in the direction of the length of the hinge, as a4, and the slot a5, opening downwardly at an angle of ninety degrees to the slot a4 for the purpose of placing the same in position to engage the projecting pin a, cast upon the box a for that purpose. To attach the valve a to the box a,
the valve a is raised to such a position as will bring the slot a5 vertically over the pin a6, when it is dropped into position, as shown.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modification of the hinge, inasmuch as the hinge co2 is let into the side of the box a, which is provided with a recess o7, adapted to receive the hinge in the manner above stated, thereby permitting the sides to be made with a smooth outer surface. It will be observed that by pivoting the valve in the rear of its center the Iiow of water and sewage opens the valve and the force of gravity automatically returns the same to its seat, as shown.
By constructing a sewer-trap in the manner shown and4 described displacement of parts is entirely avoided and the cost of manufacture materially reduced.
Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a sewer-trap the combination hereiubefore stated of a gate or valve having offset lugs projecting from one side or face and having L-shaped slots formed therein, as and for the purposes shown and described.
2. In a sewertrap, the combination hereinbefore stated of a gate or valve having offset lugs projecting therefrom and L-shaped slots formed therein, with the projecting pin o, for the purposes described and shown.
3. In a sewer-trap, the combination hereinbefore stated of a box a, having a recess a7 cast therein, with a valve having hinges cast thereon, with longitudinal and perpendicular slots, as shown and described, and for the purposes stated.
CHRISTIAN C. FUNK.
