SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 735,481, dated August 4, 1903. Application filed February 11,1903. Serial No. 142,883.. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARVID EK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, referencebeing had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in hinges.
The invention comprehends a hinge designed primarily for securing covers to hollow bodies, more particularly such covers as it .is desired shall be temporarilyprevented from closing when in open position and which cannot fall by force of gravity when being closed, whereby said cover may be lowered without jar and the creation of objectionable noise or talities which will constantly afford a fric damage to the body incident to such jar.
To this end the invention contemplates the provision of a hinge provided with instrumentional resistance to the movement of the same, also with means for adjusting the frictional resistance, and, further, with means whereby the hinge may be readily secured to bodies forined of porcelain or other composite materia Novel details in the construction and arrangement of the several parts of the hinge will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter when read in connection withthe accompanying drawings, forming part here of, and wherein a preferable embodiment of the T the appended claims, because minor changes in theconstruction shownmay obviously be made withoutdeparting from the principle of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved hinge as utilized for securing a wooden cover to a porcelain bowl. Fig. 2 is a top plan of Fig. 1, portions being shown in section. Fig. 3 is an end view of the hinge, and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on the line am: of Fig. 2.
p 1 Referring more specifically to the drawings, A designates a hollow bowl, and B is a cover therefor.
' O is a connecting portion or member uniting ears D and D", extending outwardlytherefrom approximately at right angles thereto. The inner surface 0 of the connecting member 0 is preferably flat and adapted to abut the rear edge of the seat 13 and be secured thereto by screws 19 passing through suitable apertures formed in said member. To prevent any lateral play of the cover or lid B, which might loosen the screws 1), the hinge is provided with the outwardly-inclined flanges E E, arranged to be secured by screws 1) to the side edges of the cover;
F designates stub-pintles screw-threaded on their exterior to engage the correspondingly-threaded openings fin the ears D D, arranged in horizontal alinement, as shown. The sides of the rear portion of the bowl A are provided with angular seats or recesses a,
into which fit non-rotatable inserts G, which constitute fixed bearings for the ends of the pintles F. The ends of the pintles are tapered, as at g, and engage the correspondinglytapered interior surfaces g of the inserts G. To attain the objects hereinbefore stated, it is desirable that sufficient friction be created at the pivot-points of the hinge to maintain the cover or lid in elevated position until forcibly closed and also to retard the movement of said cover when being closed to prevent falling of the same.-= It is for this purpose that the pintles F have the threaded engagement with the ears D, for it will be appreciated that as said pintles are screwed inwardly, through the medium of the knobs H at the onterends thereof, through the ears D and into engagement with the inclined surfaces of the inserts or bearings G the ears will be correspondingly forcibly separated, whereby any degree of friction may be'secured between the tapered ends 9 of the pintles and the contacting surfaces of their bearings G. The object in taper-ing the ends 9 of the pintles and correspondingly tapering the bearings G is to provide for a much greater frictional engaging surface thercbetween than is attainable when the extreme ends only of the pintles contact the base of the hollowportion of said bearings.
To look the pintlesin adjusted position, nuts ICO I are provided which engage the threads of the pintles and contact the outer surfaces of the ears. By my hinge a cover can be pivoted directly upon a bowl, the stub-pintles fitting recesses therein, reinforced, if desired, thereby overcoming the objectionable characteristics of those constructions employing vertical posts fastened to the bowl and to the upper ends of which the cover is hinged.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a bowl of the character described having oppositely-disposed recesses of irregular contour in its sides and a cover for said bowl, a hinge for connecting the cover to the bowl comprising rigid metallic bearings of irregular contour fitting the recesses in the bowl and non-rotatable therein, and adjustable stub-pintles carried by the cover and projecting into said bearings in the recesses in the bowl so as to turn therein, said bearings being closed at their inner end to prevent contact of the ends of the pintles with the bowl.
2. In combination with a bowl and a cover therefor, metallic insert-bearings in the sides of the bowl, a hinge for securing the cover to the bowl comprising oppositely-disposed ears in approximate alinement with the bearings in the bowl, a connecting member integral with and uniting the ears secured to the rear edge of the cover, and stub-pintles having an adjustable engagement-with said ears and arranged to project into said bearings in the bowl.
v 3. In combination with a bowl of the character described having oppositely-disposed recesses in its sides and a cover for said bowl,
a hinge for connecting the cover to the bowl.
comprising non-rotatable rigid metallic bearin gs fitting the recesses in the bowl, and stubpintles carried by the cover and projecting into said bearings in the recesses in the bowl so as to turn therein, the inner ends of said bearings being closed to prevent contact of the ends of the pintles with the bowl.
4. The combination with a bowl of the character described having oppositely-disposed recesses in its sides and a cover for said bowl, a hinge for connecting the cover to the bowl comprising non-rotatable rigid metallic bearings fitting the recesses in the bowl, and adjustable stub-pintles carried by the cover and projecting into said bearings in the recesses in the bowl so as to turn therein, said pintles frictionally engaging the inner surfaces of the metallic bearings.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' ARVID EK.
