i=nmw UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH ll. LEITH, OF SANDPATCII, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR DRESSING AND JOINTING SAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,446, dated January 13,- 1891.
Application filed August 20, 1890. Serial No. 362,503. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. LEITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandpatch, in the countyof Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and 'useful Device for Side Dressing and Jointing the Teeth of Circular Saws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for jointing and tube side dressing circular saws; and it has for its object to construct an apparatus of this class which shall be simple and easily operated,and by means of which the teeth of circular saws of various sizes may betrimmed with perfect accuracy.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, to be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a side view showing my improved saw jointer and gager mounted upon the mandrel or arbor of a circular saw in position for operation. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
1 designates a clamp or collar, which is divided, as shown in Fig. 1, and provided with a set-screw 2, by means of which it may be loosely mounted upon a saw-arbor or upon a collar rigidly secured to the latter. The collar 1 is provided with an outwardly-extending arm 23, terminating in a tubular portion 4, having a set-screw 5, by means of which an extension-arm 6 may be secured in the said tubular section. The outer end of the extension-arm 6, which latter is preferably made of round iron, is screw-threaded, as shown at 7, and is screwed into an inverted-U-shaped clamp S, which is adapted to straddle the saw 9, and the arms of which are provided with set-screws 10, which may be made to bear lightly against opposite sides of the saw, for the purpose of steadying and guiding the device in operation. The outer end of the U- shaped clamp 8 is provided with a suitablyshaped recess 1l,in which are seated the files 12 and 13, which are held in place in said recess by means of a set-screw 14, which latter may be tightened to bring the files up against the points of the saw-teeth. The files 12 are beveled, as shown, or placed in oppositely-inclined positions, so as to engage opposite sides of the points of the saw-teeth and impart to the latter the desired shape.
The operation of my invention and its advantages will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. The construction of the device is simple and inexpensive, and it may be quickly mounted for operation upon the arbor of a circular saw of any dimensions, the extension-rod 6 being adjustable radially to the axis of such arbor. The proper adjustment having been made, and the files having been tightened up against the points of the saw-teeth by means of the set-screw 14, the saw is subjected to the action of the files.
By this device circular saws may be sharpened very quickly and effectively, and the teeth will all be left of precisely the same size, thus enabling the saw to perform its work more neatly and effectively and without danger of any of the saw-teeth being broken owing to an excess of length.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In a device of the class described, the U- shaped clamp mounted upon a suitable ex tension-rod extending from a ring or collar and having the socket provided with oppositely-beveled sides,the files 12 and 13,n1ounted in said socket, and the set-screw 14, adapted to force the said files against the points of the saw-teeth, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH II. LEITH.
