Description

(No Model.)
P. SAWHILL. TEETH SEPARATOR. No. 440,500. Patented Nov. '11, 1800.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRELINGHUYSEN SAWHILL, OF HASTINGS, NEBRASKA.
TEETH-SEPRAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,509, dated November 11,18901.
Application filed July 29| 1890.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRELINGHU'Y'sEN SAW'- HILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hastings, in the county of Adams and State ot" Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Separating Teeth; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled 1n the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for separating teeth.
Frequently dentists encounter great difficulty in filling teeth owing to the fact that the teeth are crowded too close together to admit of the proper operations being performed.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and economical device whereby the teeth may be separated and held in such position until the operation otvilling is oompleted.
The invention consists in the novel implement hereinafter described, and specifically deiined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an implementfor'separating teeth made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral l designates a brace consisting ot a curved rod of metal, forming almost a complete circle. One end of the rod is provided with a conical recess, in which the correspondingly-l shaped end of a wedge 3 is inserted. This wedge is provided with an annular groove 1l, with which a pin 5, passing through the end of rod l, engages, so as to hold the wedge in place. This wedge is capable of freely revolving Within the recess in the rod. The other end of the rod is formed or provided with a tubular arm 6. Within this tube is a reciprocating rod 7, having aconical recess, within which tits and revolves a wedge 8, provided with an annular groove 9, with which a pin 10 engages to hold the wedge in place. This rod is provided with a horizontal peripheral Serial No. 360.284. (No model.)
slot l2, withwhich engages a screw 13, which prevents the rod from'revolving, but permits it to reciprocate up and down. This rod is also provided with a screw-threaded recess 14, within which works a screw-threaded rod l5, having an enlarged head 16 and an annular groove 17. With this groove engagesa screw or screws 18 to hold the rod in place. The rod is also provided with a disk 19, by which it may be rotated.
The operation will be readily understood. The implement is inserted in the mouth with the wedge 3 resting between the teeth. to be separated. The rod l5 is then rotated by means of the disk 19, which carries rod 7, to be advanced forward, carrying with it Wedge S. As these wedges thus approach each other the teeth are separated, and may beheld in such position until the iilling is completed. A reverse movement of the disk will disengage the Wedges. It Will be observed that by turning the brace to the right or left the operator is enabled to work from either side Without removing the separator.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. An implement for separating teeth, consisting of a curved metal bar or rod having a revolving wedge at one end, a tubular arm at the other end having a revolving wedge and a screw-threaded recess, and a screwthreaded rod workingin said recess, substantially as described. E
2..,In an implement for separating teeth, the combination, with the curved metal bar having a revolving wedge at one end and a tubular arm at the other end, of a rod fitting within said arm having a horizontal periph` eral slot and screw-threaded recess, a screwthreaded rod fitting in said recess having an enlarged head, annular groove, and operatingdisk, and screws engaging with said groove and slot, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence ot two witnesses.
FRELINGHUYSEN SAWHILL.
