SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,821, dated September 22, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. STOKOE, a citi-. zen of the United States, residing at J eanerette,in the parish of Iberia and State of Louisiana, have inventeda new and useful Machine for Side Filing Circular Saws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for side filing circular saws; and it has for its object to provide adevice of this class which shall be simple in construction, durable, and by means of which the teeth of circular saws may be filed rapidly and accurately, the bevel at the points of said teeth being retained.
The invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a front view of a saw-filing device 0011- structed in accordance with my invention, showing the same applied to the saw. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sec tional View taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4 4 in Fig. 1.

1 designates a frame or yoke provided at its upper end with a handle 2 and having inclined or obliquely-arranged sleeves 3 3, which are internally screw-threaded to receive the boxes 4, which may be retained securely in position in said sleeves by means of jam-nuts 5. The boxes 1 form bearings for the shafts 6, the inner ends of which carry suitably-constructed rotary files or cutters 7, the extreme inner ends of which are provided with miter-gears 8, meshing with each other, so that the said shafts shall rotate in unison together with the cutters mounted therein. The outer end of one of the shafts 6 is provided with a crank or handle 9, by means of which it may be rotated. The swinging frame or yoke 1 is hinged at 10 to a frame 11, one side of which is suitably bolted or otherwise connected to a rod or standard 12, which is secured to the guide 13, which latter is adapted to rotate around the collar 14 upon the saw-arbor. The guide 13 has a sleeve or opening 15 for the passage of the standard 12, which latter is mounted adj ustably in said sleeve by means of a set-screw 16, thus enabling the machine to be adjusted to operate'upon saws of different sizes. The standard 12 has a set-collar 17 ,provided with a screw 18, adapted to bear against the guide 13, thus enabling the said standard to be very accurately adjusted with relation to the teeth of the saw that is to be operated upon.
Suitably pivoted between the sides of the frame 11 is a pawl 19, which is adapted to engage the teeth of the saw that is being operated upon for the purpose of feeding the said saw forward for the space of one tooth after each operation. One side of the said frame is also provided with a bracket 20, having a set-screw 21, adapted to form a stop to regulate the extent of the movement of the swinging frame 1. The latter is provided on opposite sides with set-screws 22, having rounded points adapted to engage the sides of the saw that is being operated upon for the purpose of insuring steadiness of movement of the swinging frame, so that each saw-tooth shall be filed accurately alike.
The frame 11 is provided with atransverse pin 23, adapted to support the dog or pawl 19, so as to enable the latter to serve as a gage to bear against the front side of the saw-tooth which is being operated upon.
, The operation of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The operator grasps the handle 2 and pushes the same in a forward direction, thus swinging the frame 1 upon its pivot 10 until the files or cutters have been swung clear of the saw-teeth. By continuing to push the standard 12, carrying the frame 11, is pushed forwardly until the pawl 19 passes over in front of the tooth which is next to be operated upon. The operator now pulls the handle 2 toward him, thus causing the pawl 19 to be carried up into contact with the front side of the tooth that is to be operated upon, said pawl being supported upon the transverse pin 23, and thus serving to regulate the position of the frame 11 and standard 12. By continuing the pull upon the handle 2 the files or cutters are carried into contact with the. saw that is to be operated upon, the handle 9 being meanwhile rotated so as to impart a rotary motion to the files or cutters, which will thus operate upon the beveled sides of the point of the sawtooth. The set-screws 22 meanwhileserve to hold the frame steady. The frame 11 atthe upper end of the standard 12 is also provided on opposite sides with setscrews 30, bearing against opposite sides of the saw for the pur pose of steadying the machine.
It will be seen that when it shall be desired to remove the saw this may be done without necessitating the removal of the device from the collar 14 upon the saw-arbor, the swinging frame 1 being simply swung out of the way, thus enabling the standard to be swung out of position.
My improved saw-filing device is capable of being applied, when desired, to the frame of a saw-sharpening machine of well-known construction, connections being made in such a manner as to enable the filing device to be automatically operated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a machine for side filing circular saws, the combination of a guide adapted to be mounted upon a collar upon the saw arbor, a standard mounted adjustably in said guide and having a frame at its upper end, and a swinging frame hinged to the latter and carrying the rotary files or cutters, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a machine for side filing circular saws, the combination of a guide adapted to be mounted upon a collar upon the saw-arbor and having a sleeve at one end, a standard mounted in said sleeve and held by means of a set-screw, a set-collar upon the said standard having a set-screw adapted to bear again st the guide, and the saw-filing mechanism carried by said standard, substantially as set forth.
In a machine of the class described, the combination of the standard, the frame at the upper end of the latter having a pivoted pawl, and a transverse supporting-pin for the latter, the swinging yoke pivoted to said frame and having obliquely-arrangcd internally-threaded sleeves, the boxes mounted in the latter, and the shafts journaled in said boxes connected by miter-gearing and carrying suitably-constructed files or cutters, one of said shafts being provided with a crank or handle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a machine of the class described, the combination of the standard suitably connected with the saw-arbor, a frame at the upper end of said standard, having set-screws adapted to bear against opposite sides of the saw to be operated upon and provided with a bracket having aset-screw or adj usting'screw, a pivoted pawl, and a transverse supportingpin for the latter, a yoke connected pivotally with said frame and having gage-screws adapted to bear against opposite sides of the saw, and the shafts journaied obliquely in the said yokeand provided at their inner ends with miter-gearing and with suitable files or cutters, one of said shafts being provided on its outer end with a crank or handle, sub stantially as set forth.
5. In a machine of the class described, the combination of the standard having a frame at its upper end provided with a bracket having an adjusting-screw and the yoke pivoted to said frame and carrying the rotary files or cutters, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a machine of the class described, the combination, with a standard, of a frame adapted to straddle the saw to be operated upon and provided with set-screws to bear against the sides of said saw, a feed-pawl pivoted in said frame, a yoke hinged to the latter and carrying the rotary files or cutters and provided with set-screws to bear against the sides of the saw, and means for regulating or limiting the swinging movement of said frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
