PIPE-CUTTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,071, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed March 28,1904
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN L. HANNA, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
I My invention relates to an improved pipecutting machine, and will be fully understood by a reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of my device as it appears when mounted upon a pipe in readiness for operation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, the pipe being removed to illustrate 2 other features more clearly.

My improved pipe-cutter is designed especially for the purpose of cutting off pipe as 2 5 the same lies in a trench or ditch, which opera tion frequently becomes necessary in making alterations and repairs in pipe-lines.
My device consists of a central portion or tool-holder 1, which is circular or ring-shaped 3 and adapted to be revolubly mounted upon a pipe and to carry the tools or cutters 2, which operate as cutting-off tools. Said tool-holder is internally rabbeted at each end for the purpose of receiving a projection formed by ex- 3 5 ternally rabbeting the mountings 3 3, (shown in Fig. 3,) one of which mountings is placed upon each side of the tool-holder, each of which mountings is rigidly secured to the pipe by means of the set-screws 4 4 4 4. The tool- 4 holder is parted diametrically and formed in two equal portions, each substantially like the other in construction, whereby the same is adapted to be taken apart and placed upon a pipe-line where it is not possible to slip the same on over the end of the pipe. The two portions are then secured together by means of the clamping-bolts 5 5, which pass through Serial No. 200,371- (No model.)
formed in two equal pieces, having, preferably, a hinge 7 at one parting-point and lugs 8 8 at the other parting-point for the reception of the clamping-bolts 9. After the device has been placed upon the pipe and the various portions secured together by means of the clamping-bolts aforesaid the set-screws 4 4 4 4 are screwed up equally and firmly against the pipe, which secures said mountings rigidly in position, leaving the tool-holder free to revolve.
At the top of each mounting 3 3 is formed a slot 10, adapted to receive the inwardly-projecting pin 11, formed upon the extremity of each arm of the lever 12, said pin forming the fulcrum of said lever upon which it is adapted to oscillate or swing. Two pawls 14 14 are mounted upon lever 12, adapted to engage the teeth of ratchets 15 15, formed upon the periphery of the tool-holder at each end thereof. The tools or cutters 2 are placed in suitable slots formed in the tool-holder between the ratchets 15, said cutters being adapted to be fed to their work by means of the set-screws 16. The provision of the double ratchet upon the tool-holder and double pawls to engage with and drive the same is a valuable feature of my invention, as it eliminates any side draft or twisting strain upon the tool-holder, which results when but one ratchet is used, and my construction causes the tool-holder to be driven square and true without the cramping aforesaid resulting from the use of a single ratchet and pawl placed upon one side only of the cutting-tool.
It will be readily understood that as lever 12 is caused to vibrate or swing upon the pins 11 the pawls 14 will ride over the teeth 15 as said lever swings in the direction indicated by the arrow A and engage said teeth as the lever swings in the direction indicated by the arrow B, whereby said tool-holder 1 is caused to revolve.
