MARY S. W. MARTNOT, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW/@CLEANING BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,968, dated December 3,0, 1890.
Application tiled June 16,1890. Serial No. 355,628. (No model.)
.T0 @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY S. W. MARTINOT, of New York city, in the count-y and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lYindow-Cleaning Brushes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in window-cleaning brushes, and has for its object to provide a construction whereby the brush may be used with equal facility in cleaning the upper as well as the lower sashes, and wherein, also, from the inside of the room the outer faces of the glass panes may be cleaned with as much ease as the inner faces.
The invention consists in the novel con struction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter f nlly set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to behad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar iigures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the Views.
Figure l is a side elevation of the brush and its attached handle, showing` the application of the brush to the upper sash of a window, the sash being in section; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken practically upon the line of Fig. l.
The brush 10 may be of any suitable or approved construction, and the handle of the brush (designated as A) is made in two or more sections 1l and l2, the said sections being screwed one into the other, thus enabling the operator to lengthen or to shorten the handle as occasion may demand.
The upper section il of the brush-handle is screwed into a threaded aperture produced in one end of a horizontal plate or bar 18, which plate or bar is provided with a like aperture, also, at its opposite end, into which the upper end of a pole B is screwed. Both the pole B and the brush -handle A extend vertically downward from the connecting plate or bar 13. The pole B is also constructed of a series of sections 14, the said sections being screwed one into the other, so that the pole may be lengthened or shortened as required.
The bristles of the brush lO are made to face inward or in the direction of the pole B, as is illustrated in the drawings. The sections of the brush-handle, and likewise those ol' the pole, are preferably made tubular in order that the said parts maybe as light as possible, and instead of screwing the sections of the pole and brush-handle one into the other the said sections may be adjustably attached in any other approved or well-known manner.
In operation, wh en it is desired to wash the outer face of a window-pane of an upper sash l5, for instance, the sash is slightly lowered and the brush passed outward, so thatit will contact with the outer side of the pane, as shown in Fig. 1. The operator may now stand in the room, adjust the pole B, and manipulate said pole and attached brush to clean the entire outer surface of the window. lVhen t-he outer face of the upper sash pane is cleaned the said upper sash is drawn downward and the lower sash 16 is elevated and treated in like manner. To Wash the inner faces of the window-panes, the brush-handle A is detached from the connecting plate or bar 13 and the brush is used in theordinary manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l. As an improved article of manufacture, a window-cleaning brush comprising a brush having an adjustable handle, an adjustable pole, and a connectingplate, the brush-handle and the pole being attached to opposite ends of the plate, as and for the purpose speci? ed.
2. In a window-cleaning brush, the combination, with a sectional adjustable pole, of a brush facing the said pole and provided with an extensible handle, and a connecting bar or plate detachably attached to the brush-handle and pole, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a window-cleaning brush, the combination, with a pole consisting of a series of adjustable sections having a threaded connection, of a brush facing ,in the direction of the pole and provided with a handle comprising sections having a threaded connection, and a horizontal tie plate connecting the brush-handle and the pole, as and for the purpose set forth.
MARY S. lV. MAR-TINOT.
