TRACE-CARRIER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,870, dated December 30, 1890.

Application filed May 23, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RAPHAEL THOMAS SEMMEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back Band Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures and letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates especially to devices for attaching traces to back-bands, and also, if desired, for suspending the reins or driving-lines of plow-harness,the object being to so improve such devices that they can be easily and cheaply constructed and be durable and efficient in operation, neither liable to tear the band nor slip thereon, nor to be easily broken, and to provide means for preventing the band from rubbing the horse and preventing the trace from abrading the horse' or the band.

The details and construction whereby these ends are attained are hereinafter fully clescribed and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the parallel or crimpingbars provided with a downward loop at or near the middle, from whichis suspended a swinging hook, said bars and downward loop being formed of a single piece of wire having its ends looped together or bent one around the other. Fig. 2 is a view of the shield or guard to keep the traces from abrading the band or the horse, combined with or made integrally with the center bar, which forms a core around which the band passes. Fig. 3 is a view of the depending shield having a loop bent thereon for receiving the reins. Fig. 4 is an edge view thereof from the left-hand side of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 shows the device as bent upintegrally of a single piece of wire, except the depending hook. Fig. 6 is a View showing the parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2 assembled and placed on a band. Figs. 7 and 8 are edge views of Fig. 6 from the right and left hand sides, respectively. Fig. 9 is a sectional view illustrating the coopera ion of the crimping-bars Serial No. 352,924. (No model.)

The buckle B consists of two elements, the first being the parallel or crimping bars E, from which is suspended the swinging hook F, and which is shown in Fig. 1. element is the combined center bar or core and the depending shield or guard D, which is shown in Fig. 2, and shown with modifications in Figs. 3 and 4. The shield D is bent, as shown in Fig. 2, in the form of a loop wider at its top, the top portion 1 being straight.

Fig. 1 illustrates the crimping-bars E,which are also formed of a single .piece of wire bent parallel, as shown, the ends being suitably fastened together, a loop 5 on the part 4: be-

ing bent around the part 0 in the constr'uction shown, a loop 7 being bent into the part 4 to sustain the suspension-hook F.

Figs. 3 and 4 show modifications of the depending shield D, in which the suspension of the reins is provided for by a loop 8 on the said parts projecting upwardly and forming a part thereof.

If desired, the entire device, barring the swinging hook F, can be formed of a single continuous piece of wire, as shown in Fig. 5, being bent as follows: Sufficient length is measured off for the straight transverse piece 1, and a downward bend 3 is then made of sulficient length proportionately, which is curved inwardly at 2, passing upwardly to near the free end of part 1, when it is bent inwardly and a straightportion 6 made parallel to part 1, having at or near its middle a loop 7, and after passing to a point near the other end of part- 1 takes a return bend, forming another straight portion 4, parallel to part1, all three being in the same relative position, substantially as shown in Fig. 9, after which a loop 5 is bent downwardly on the free end of the part 4, passing around and clamping the part 4, but leaving that end of part 1 free to move vertically in the buckle to the band, which is done by passing the end of the band in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 9, under part 4, around part 1, and back over the part 6, the two

It is obvious thatthis construction of buckle I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a device of the class specified, the parallel or crimping bars carrying a swinging hook of suitable character and the center bar or core carrying a depending trace-shield, all combined, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a trace-carrier, the combination of the crimping-loop, the swinging hook F, attached to said loop, and t e center bar or core having the dependent shield D, said shield having an upwardly-extending reiircarrier.
