Description

(NoModeli) I S. S. ALSPACH. FARM GATE.
No. 443,843. Patented Dec; 30, 1890.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL S. ALSPACH, OF THORNVILLE, OHIO.
FARM- GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,843, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed August 7 1890.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. ALSPAOH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Thornville, in the county of Perry and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is, a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in gates of that class known as farm-gates.
The object of the invention is to provide a gate of the character referred to which shall be readily operated, and at the same time combine simplicity with durability of construction.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and specifically defined in the claims,
I11 the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved gate. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite side. Fig. 3 1s a face view of the shutting-post, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A indicates the shutting-post, said post being provided on its inner face and near the lower end with a notched plate or projection a.
The swinging posts are indicated by the letters B B, said posts being arranged obliquely with reference to each other, and connected at their upper ends by a horizontal bar 0, said bar being provided with a central perforation c.
The gate proper is indicated by the letter D, and consists of a series of horizontal slats cl, vertical slats d, and braces (1 The end vertical slats have secured to their upper ends angular brackets E E, in which are journaled upon transverse bolts F F rollers G G.
The letter H indicates an upper track or guide for the rollers, said track being provided at one end with a notch h, which fits over a pin or bolt I within a notch a in the upper end of the shutting-post. The track is also provided immediately above the horizontal bar 0 with a downwardly-proj ectin g bearinglug h, said lug in turn being provided with a Serial No. 361,248. (No model.)
pin or pintle J, which enters the central perforation c of bar O, and thereby secures a pivotal connection between the two. This lug also serves to elevate this end of the track, thus providing a gradual incline from the shutting-post to the opposite end of the track. This latter end is provided with an upwardlyextending stop or lug 72, 7
Having thus described the construction of my improved gate, the operation of the same is as follows: When it is desired to open the gate, all that is necessary to be done is simply to slide the same longitudinally for about one-half of its length, or until one of the rollers comes into contact with the end stop or lug 77, lVhen this point is reached, a slight downward force upon the end of the track will release the notch upon the opposite end from engagement, when, of course, the gate may be readily turned upon its pivotal point and swung to an open position. In closing the gate the same is swung around until the notched end of the track engages the transverse pin, and the gate is then moved longitudinally until the appropriate horizontal I slat thereof comes into engagement with the notched plate or projection a, which of course securely locks the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination, with agate proper consisting of horizontal and vertical slats and suitable braces, of a shutting-post provided upon its inner face with a notched plate and having its upper end bifurcated, a bolt or pin passing through said bifurcated portion, obliquely-arranged swinging posts connected at their upper ends by ahorizontal bar, angular brackets secured to the upper ends of the end vertical slats, rollers journaled therein, and an inclined track having pivotal connection with the horizontal bar of the swinging posts, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a gate proper consisting of horizontal and vertical slats and suitable braces, of a shutting-post provided upon its inner face with a notched plate and having its upper end bifurcated, a bolt or pin passing through said bifurcated portion, obliquely-arranged swinging posts, a horizontal bar connecting the upper ends of downxvardly-extending lug or projection provided with a suitable pi u or pintlewhieh entors the perforation of said horizontal bar, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
SAMUEL S. A'LSPACH.
