UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
\VINFIELD JACKSON MECOY, OF HUNTINGDON, TENNESSEE.
BOOK-CASE AND STU'DENTS TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,713, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed March 29, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WINFIELD JACKSON ME- COY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Huntingdon, in the county of Carroll and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Combined Book-Case and Students Table, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in tables and book-cases; and the object is to provide an article of furniture of the kind named which presents the combination of a revolving table and a revolving book-case constructed in an improved way, so as to present the books in the case conveniently, and adapted to have the-books arranged on the revolving table-top convenient and ready for reference.
With this object in view my invention consists in the novel construction of parts and their combination, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specially as the same is particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.
' I have fully and clearly illustrated my improvements in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective of the table and book-case. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the frame to support the revolving table-top and bookcase. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the supporting-frame. Fig. 4 is abottom view of the revolving table-top. Fig. 5 is a vertical central sectional View.
Reference being had to the drawings, A designates the supporting-frame, composed of the corner uprights 1, connected at the top and bottom by cross-pieces 2 3 and made rectangular in shape. Secured centrally at the bottom is a cross-piece 4 to support the bookcase and having in the middle a pivot-bearing 5, on which is pivoted the book-case, and across the top, preferably arranged at right angles to the cross-piece 4c, is secured a crosspiece 6, having a bearing 7 in the middle to receive the upper pivot of the book-case. This crosspiece 6 is secured with its ends to the under sides of the top cross-pieces of the frame, substantially as shown. In the several inner corners of the frame, at the upper Serial No. 268,857. (No model.)
end thereof, are secured brackets 8, having apertures 9 to receive rollers 10, which bear on the under surface, and may run in a circular groove in the under side of the tabletop and support the outerpart of the top and permit it to be readily turned on its central supporting-pivot. The frame is supported on casters 11 of any approved style, in order that it may be moved readily from one place in the room to another.
B designates the book-case,wliich may have one or more shelves. The bottom and lower plates of the book-case have pivots 12 13 secured to them, respectively, which are arranged in the bearings 5 and 7 of the crosspieces 2 and 3.
The frame of the book-case is made of such size as to permit its corners to revolve free of the uprights of the supporting-frame.
O designates the revolving table-top, which has a central bearing 14 to take a pivot 15, fixed on the top of cross-piece 16, secured across the top of the supporting-frame, and in the under side of the table-top is formed a circular groove 17, in which the projecting perimeters of the rollers 10 engage and run when the top is revolved, as heretofore mentioned.
In order that the revolving table-top may be stopped and secured at any desired point, I form in the under side of the top small holes 18 or secure catches 19 thereon, and to the corner of the frame secure a latch or bolt 20, the end of which may engage the holes or catches of the top and thus hold it from being revolved. I
My improved table and book-case is especially useful for offices and libraries, since the books arranged in the case can be those most essential for references, and they may be taken out of the case and laid on the table, opened at the reference-page, and there remain undisturbed until all the desired references are supplied and arranged on the revoluble top. The writing materials and implements and a lamp can be arranged on the center of the top, and in that position the top may be revolved without causing them to turn out of reach of the person. When the examination of the books on the table has been completed, they may be returned to the case without the inco11 venience of getting up and carrying them to a case, since the top may be turned until each book is brought to the hand and the case be turned until its place on the shelf is reached.
What I claim is- The combined book-case and Writing-table herein described, comprising the rectangular frame A,the revolving book-case B, IDOU nted within the frame on vertical pivots t0 revolve clear of the uprights of the frame, brackets 8, secured in the upper angles of the frameA
