METHOD OF BURNING CRUDE PETROLEUM.

Be it known that I, LOUIS GoDDU, of Winchester, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Methods of Burning Crude Petroleum, of
which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel method for the consumption of crude petroleum.
Prior to my invention I am aware that attempts have been made to employ crude petroleum as a fuel for heating purposes; but prior to my invention this has not been successfully done, so far asI am aware, because the heavier hydrocarbons, when subjected to heat, are deposited in the burner or apparatus employed, such deposit accumulating rapidly and choking up the burner 0r apparatus, the said material deposited as described being further deleterious because it forms a non-heat-conducting coating or lining within the burner.
By repeated experiments I have ascertained that crude petroleum may be successfully burned by heating the burner on its under side by the flame arising from the combustion of the crude petroleum in the burner, whereby the crude oil is heated intensely and the heavier hydrocarbons are therebydisintegrated to such extent as to be readily consumed.
My invention therefore consists in that improvement which consists in igniting crude petroleum in a shallow trough or burn er and heating the burner on its under side by the flame generated by the combustion of the crude petroleum in the burner, substantially as will be described.
The drawing represents in section and elevation a sufiicient portion of a firetube boiler provided with a petroleum-burner to enable my invention to be understood.

The burner referred to is composed of an annular shallow trough a, having secured to or forming part of it an upwardly and preferably outwardly expanded or extended side The side wall a is provided on its outerside with legs or studs a which project down at intervals, so as to leave an opening a between every two adjacent legs for the passage of air. Each depending leg a as herein shown, is provided with. a slot into which is fitted the upper end of a concaved plate or wall a, constituting a deflector, the said legs being secured to the said plate or wall in any desired or suitable manner. The deflecting-wall a is shown in Fig. 1 as circular in form to conform to the shape of the shallow trough, and the said deflecting-wall forms with the outer upturned side of the said trough a passage a, through which the flame from the burning oil is directed down under and in contact with the bottom of the shallow trough.
The deflecting'wall a in the present instance is cored annularly near its upper end above the shallow trough to form a circumferential passage at, having its inlet mouth or port connected to a steam-inlet pipe a provided with a cook or valve a the outlet end or mouth of the passage a communicating with the radial passage a formed in the defleeting-wall. The passage a extends down to the bottom of the deflecting-wall a and communicates with theinterior of the burner through a port, which is controlled, as herein shown, by a plug-valve a The steam-inlet pipe or in practice is connected to the steamdome of the boiler.
The passage a at its upper end, preferably at the junction of the said passagewith the circumferential passage a may be provided with an outlet-port a located above the shallow trough a, and adapted to admit steam into the space between the side walls a, and deflecting-wall a above the said trough, the said outlet-port being controlled, as herein shown, by a plug-valve b, extended through a hollow arm I) of the deflecting-wall a, the
said arm being extended through the side of the boiler, as herein shown, and provided with a suitable stuffing-box b of any usual construction.
The crude petroleum-oil is supplied to the burner or shallow trough through a pipe 17, extended through the boiler-shell and connected to a valve-casing b having its inlet- Dort connected by a pipe b to a supply-tank b, the pipe if being supplied with a suitable cock or valve 11 The valve-casing Z)" is provided with a suitable valve, which is substantially such as shown and described in the said application, the said valve being connected by lever b and rod 5 to the lever Z2 secured to or forming part of a regulator I), communicating with the steam-space of the boiler. The valve of the casing b is also eonnected by levers D and rod 1) to a float Z1 contained within a vessel or receptacle Z2 which is connected by a pipe U to the lower portion of the burner.
The boiler will be provided with the usual dampers, (not shown,) by which air may be admitted to the fire-box to support combustion.
In operation the oil is admitted into the shallow trough a and is ignited, and the air in the tire-box passes through the spaces a and down through the passage (L5, carrying with it the flame arising from the burning oil,
the said flame then passing upward through the burner, so that the said burner is intensely heated on its underside, and the heavier particles or hydrocarbons of the crude petroleum are in this manner disintegrated to such extent as to be readily consumed. 3y causing the flame arising from the burning oil to pass through the burner, as described, it will be seen that the oil in theburner issubjeeted on all sides to an intense heat. In other words, the said oil is practically surrounded or enveloped by flame, whereby the disintegration of the heavier hydrocarbons is effected.
I claim- The herein-described method of burning crude petroleum-oil, which consists in igniting the crude petroleum in a shallow trough or burner and heating the burner on its under side by the flame generated by the combustion of the crude petroleum in the burner, whereby the heavier hydrocarbons are disintegrated and consumed, substantially as described.
