-WILLIAM lV. LEAK, OF MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,579, dated December 30, 1890.
Application tiled April 23, 1890. Serial No. 349,181. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. LEAK, of Montgomery, in the county of Montgomery and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in that class of plows in which the points or sweepblades are made of metal sufiiciently thin to form an edge, and so avoid the necessity of sharpening and resliarpening the said sweepblades.
The invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view, and Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View, of my improved device; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on about line 3 3 of Fig. l.
The point or blade Ais made of metal sufIiciently thin to present edgewise practicallya cutting-edge, and is formed of side sections or wings a a, which meet at point a' and form a V shape, as shown. As these points are of light thin metal, it becomes necessary to brace the point, and it is desirable to effect the bracing in such manner as to avoid the addition of any considerable weight to the blade to permit the soil thrown up by the blade to pass readily through and to render the replacing of the wearing parts of such bracing construction easy and inexpensive.
To this end I make the bracing construction in the form of a frame consisting, as shown, of cross-bar B and the connecting-bar C, which form a T, as shown. The bar B extends between the wings a, and is secured rigidly to both such wings at a point near their free ends, usually by riveting, as shown.
The bar C connects at its free end with the under side of the bladeA at the point thereof or juncture of the Wings ct, and is preferably secured by riveting, as shown. At its opposite end the bar C laps against the bar B at the middle of the latter, and both bars B and C have coincident holes for the heel-screw of the plow, so that the said bars B and C are secured by the same screw which fastens the plow to its standard or support. The bars B and C form a positive brace and enable the use of much thinner steel than could be otherwise used. The bar B is subjectl to no considerable wear, and is practically indestructible, while the bar C, if worn at its point, may be removed and resharpened, or may be replaced at a slight cost. The brace-frame being open also permits the free passage of the soil thrown up by the sweepblade.
By using bars B and C, as shown, l dispense with all useless material, and so lighten and cheapen the construction.
The point or blade A may be secured to the plow stock or standard D by means of the screw or bolt CZ, passed through the bars B and C at their juncture, and then through the part D and secured by a nut or in other suitable manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new isna l. The combination, substantially as described, of the V-shaped sweep having its side wings diverging from its point, and the T- shaped open brace-frame having its arms secured t0 the sweep at the point thereof and at or near the free ends of its side wings, all substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
-2. The improvement in plows, substantially as herein described, consisting of the V- shaped sweep having the side Wings united at one end, the cross-bar B, extended between and secured to such wings near their free ends, and the bar C, secured at one end to the sweep at the juncture of its wings and connected at its opposite end with the cross-bar B at about/the middle of the latter, substantially as set forth.
WILLIAM W. LEAK. Witnesses: E. E. SIMPSON,
J. F. DENNIS.
