SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,089, dated December 23, 1890,

Be it known that I, JOHN C. GOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Seneca, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Straw-Carrying Attachments for Thrashing-Wiachines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a straw-carrying attachment for thrashing-machines.
The object of my invention is to arrange the straw-carrying attachment so that it can be adjusted to various heights and inclinations to suit the necessities of the occasion.
With this end in view my invention consists in the peculiar features and combinations of parts, more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side View of my device as applied to an ordinary thrashingmachine. Dotted lines show the outer section lowered. Fig. 2 is a similar View, showing both sections lowered, and Fig. 3 a top view of the sections in this position.
The reference-letter a represents any ordinary thrashing-machine to which my attachment can be applied. This attachment consists of two hinged sections, an inner or main section b and an outer section K, pivotally connected with the free end of the inner section. Both sections are provided with elevating-aprons g g,like those common to machines of this class. The main section is pivoted directly upon the driving-shaft c, and the outer section K is pivoted directly upon the sprocket-wheel shaft j, journaled in bearings Z, rigidly secured to thc free end-of the main section. A similar shaft 7L is also journaled upon the free end of the main section, and both these shafts are provided with sprocket-wheels t and m, which take the drive-chain n. 'By this means motion is communicated from the elevator-aprons g to the elevator-aprons g upon the outer section. This arrangement of the shafts h and j upon the free end of the section?) permits the outer section to be raised and lowered without slacking or in any measure affecting the operation of drive-chain n n.
The main section bis raised and lowered to any desired inclination by means of a rope or similar device s, which has one end fastened to a pulley-shaft t, while the opposite end is secured and winds upon the windlass u. A similar rope o is attached to the free end of the outer section K and passes back over the pulleys w and winds upon a second independent windlass x. Both these windlasses areprovidedwith pawl-and-ratchet mechanism and cranks y y for operating them.
From the construction just described it will readily be seen that the outer section of the carrier can -be raised and lowered and held in any desired position with the greatest ease by means of the windlass r and that such movements do not disturb the operation of the sprocket-chain n n nor in any way interfere with its successful operation. This arrangement allows the outer section to be operated independently of the main section, whereby the carrier can be made to adapt itself to the vsize of the straw-stack. The main section can be lowered to extend the outer section farther away from the machine, so that the length and degree of inclination of the carrier can be regulated with the greatest precision.
The advantages of my device are that it saves the labor of several men in managing the straw-stack as it grows in size, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A In a straw-carrier, the combination of a main drive-shaft, an inner carrier-section pivoted thereon at its inner end, a shaft journaled in the outer end of said section, an endless apron carried by said shafts, a sprocket- Wheel on one end of the outer shaft, hangers or brackets rigidly secured to and depending from the outer end of saidinner section back of said sprocket-wheel, a counter-shaft having bearings in the lowerends of said brackets, a sprocket-wheel on one end of this shaft, a sprocket-chain connecting said wheel and the one on the shaft above, an outer section pivoted at its inner endon said counter-shaft7 IOO ropes are Wound to elevate the outer section independently of the inner, substantially as and for the purpose described.
