- STATES JOSIAH HULLAH, OF AMBOY, ILLINOIS.
MEANS FOR CONNECTING STATlONARY MACHINES TO PORTABLE ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Iietters Patent No. 496,568, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed August 11. 1892. Serial No. 442,756. (No model.)
I zen of the United States, residing at Amboy,
in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Connecting Stationary Machines to Portable Engines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in means for connecting stationary machines such as thrashing machines, corn shellers, &c., to portable engines, my object being to so arrange the pulley that the motive power may be placed in any convenient position irrespective of the location of the machine.
To this end my invention consists of certain improvements of construction and ar rangements of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which represent my invention applied to a corn sheller: Figure 1 is a front view in elevation; Fig. 2, a side view in elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan view of my complete invention, showing the method of arranging the same.
The reference lettera representsthe frame of an ordinary corn sheller to which my improvements are applied by means of the brackets 19 and b projecting laterally from the side of the machine, and having the hearing boxes 0 and 0 formed in their ends. Journaled in these boxes is a vertical shaft d, having the flanged pulley d fixed thereto. This forms the driving pulley of the machine.
Journaled in boxes 6 and e is a vertical shaft f to whose upper end is fixed a beveled gear wheel g. This gear wheel meshes with a similar gear g keyed to the main shaft g of the machine. The lower end of the shaft f has fixed thereto a smaller beveled gear h, which in turn meshes with a second beveled gear h keyed to the tumbler-rod shaft f.
Mounted on shaft f, between its bearings e and e, is a spur gear wheel 1'. This gear meshes with a pinion j keyed to the pulley shaft d. By means of these gears the shaftf is given a continuous rotary motion which imparts a similar motion to the shaftsf and g. The belt from the pulley r-attached to the engine or motive power employed, passes over the pulley (1 having a vertical axis and is prevented from slipping down by means of the belt-support k. This latter arrangement will now be described.
Mounted on a horizontal shaft m is a flanged pulley, Z. The shaft is journaled in the upper end of the leg n. Hinged to this leg at 0 is a second leg or support p, which is so constructed that it may be made to swing toward or from the leg n. The lower ends of each of the legs a and p, are provided with metallic spurs or points g, which are adapted to engage the ground or floor upon which the support may be resting. By means of this arrangement the power belt is prevented from slipping down off the pulley e, and becoming entangled with the working parts of the machine.
It is obvious that by this manner of arranging the power pulley, the source of power may be placed in any position within the circumference of the semi-circle which lies around one side of the machine. I-Ieretofore this could not be accomplished by reason of thepulley being located horizontally.
This defect causes much trouble and annoyance. in the arrangement of the machines, and is overcome by my improvement. 8 5
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a pulley having a vertical axis located on a stationary machine, a pulley having a horizontal axis on a movable engine or other source of power from which pulley power is derived and the pulley having a vertical axis driven, a belt connecting said pulleys, and a portable belt sup 5 porter having a pulley having a horizontal axis arranged between the two pulleys to change the edgewise disposition of the belt from a horizontal to a vertical position, whereby the power pulley and machine to which it is attached may be placed in any position, irrespective of the position of the pulley having a Vertical axis, within the radius of the semicircle that the connecting belt is capable of describing, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOSIAH HULLAII.
