POMPEIUS PHILIPPI, OF BEAR-DSTOWN, ILLINOIS.
STRAW-CARRlE R OF THRASHlNG-MACHINES.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,620, dated January 24, 185.2.
Application filed September 28, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, I'OMPEIUS PHILIPPI, a
citizen ofthe United States, residing at Beards town, in the county of Cass and State of Illinois, have invented ci-rtain new and useful Improvements in Straw Carriers of Thrashing- Machines; and [do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. I
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a part of amachine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 a side elevation.
The present invention is designed as an improvement in working the straw-carriers of separators of thrashing-machines, whereby the straw is stackedautomatically. This is usually effected by means of an inclined plane or platform, which receives the straw as it issues from the machine, and along the surface of whichit is conveyed by suitable means until it falls on thestack or mow. As the straw is usually disposed in large stacks itnecessitates making the carriers of considerable length, and to properly deposit the straw where required as the stack increases in height it=has become necessary to provide means for raising the carrier to the height desired.
In addition to the raising and lowering of the carrier, as above described, it has been found necessary to provide means whereby the carrier may be swung or turned either to the right or left, or to either side of the machine, in order to properly deliver the straw to the place ofdeposit. This changing of position of the carrier to either side of the machine has usually been effected by manual labor; and it is the object of my invention to provide means whereby the lateral or sidewisc adjustmentof the carrier will be automatically effected through connection made with the drivingpower of the thrashing-machine. This object I attain by the mechanism substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings,Arepresents the rear end of a thrashing-machine of the ordinary construction, and provided with the (No model.)
usual separators or sieves, a, and means for actuating them, said machine being mounted in the usual manner upon wheels I).
To a frame-work, B, upon the under side of the machine A,is pivoted a horizontal support, (Land to this support is pivoted the strmv-carrier frame D. The carrier-frame D is of the ordinary construction, and, if desired, may have slatted belt or apron to move the straw.
To one side of the carrier is journaled a pulley, 0, over which passes a belt, 0, which also passes over a like pulley, d, as shown in Fig. 2.
To the opposite end of the shaft carrying the pulley d is affixed a small bevel-gear wheel,f, the teeth of which mesh withthose upon a. large bevel-gear wheel, g, moving around a stationary vertical shaft, It, to which the support 0 is pivoted.
Gearing with the large wheel 9 is a second bevel-gear wheel, t, rigidly secured to a shaft, k,and to the opposite end of the shaft is a similar bevel-gear wheel, Z. This last-mentioned gear-wheel l meshes with the teeth upon a like gear-wheel, m, secured to a shaft, n, disposed at right angles with the shaft 70. To the opposite end of this shaft n is rigidly connected at double pulley, 0, over which passes a belt or cord,p, connecting with a pulley. 1', upon a shaft, 8, at the top of the machine. The opposite end of the shafts terminates in a worm, t, which engages with a horizontal worm-wheel, E, said wheel having connected to its upper side a crank-arm, a.
To the outer end of the arm u is pivoted an intermediate arm or link, 12, the opposite end thereof being also pivoted to an arm, w. This arm to is rigidly secured to a frame or bar, F, pivoted in the middle to a timber projecting over the rear end of the machine, and the frame or bar F is connected with the carrier D by chains or cords y. These chainsor cords pass around a suitable Windlass, G, which has its hearings in the frame I said Windlass having connected thereto the usual crank, ratchetwheel, and paw], so that when the chains or cords are being wound around the Windlass to raise or elevate the carrier the ratchet-wheel and pawl will prevent the Windlass from turning in a reverse direction.
The carrier-frame, it"should be noticed, is not connected directly to the machine, but to an independent frame-work. B,detachaltlyconnected to the under side of the machine, so that it can be removed when required.
When the thrashing-machine is in operation the belt from said machine is connected with the double pulley 0, through which motion is imparted to the operating mechanism, which, being connected, as hereinbet'ore described, to the carrier-frame D, will cause it to be moved sidewise, or, in other words, automatically imparting to the carrier a lateral continuous swinging motion.
My improvementmay beattached to any machine of whatever construction, saving much time and labor heretofore required in ,operating the carrier.
The straw-carrier may be of the kind ordinarily in use, as I lay no claim to any special form or construction of the same, and other means may be employed in place of the windlass for raising or lowering the carrier, as they form no partof my invention, and therefore may be changed or modified. as circumstances may require, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a thrashingmachine and the carrier attachment thereof, of
mechanism, substantially as shown and described, for automaticallyimparting to the carrier a continuous lateral swinging motion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a thrashing-machine, the combination of the carrier frame D, pivoted frame F, shaft 8, worm t, worm-wheel E, crank-arm u, connected thereto, and the pivoted arm '0, said arm being suitably connected to the frame F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a thrashing-machine, the combination of the pivoted carrier-t'ra me D, the pivoted support 0, the frame-work B,andmechanism, substantially as described, for imparting to the carrier a continuous lateral swinging motion, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
