A. ROSS.
ADJUSTABLE BINDER FOR BOOKS, PAMPHLETS, &c.
No. 442,206. Patented Dec. 9, 1890.
Witmaooao iu aft 064401136 AUGUSTFS ROSS, ()F ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO )[AlILON B. \VALLACE, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE BlNDER FOR BOOKS, PAMPHLETS, 84.6.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,206, dated December 9, 1890.
Application filed July 21,1890. Serial No. 859,360. (No model) To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS ROSS, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Adjustable Binders for Books, Pamphlets, and the Like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable binders for books, pamphlets, and the like; and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and designated in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a book embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the binder. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section taken on the line of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a modification of my invention; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross-section taken on the line 3 y of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent the two leaves composing a cover for a book, and the back or uniting portion for the said leaves, to which the detachable sections of my invention are attached.
4 represents one of the sections of the binder, which consists of a thin strip of metal of sufficient width, the length thereof corresponding to the length of the book or cover thereof, said metal being flanged or bent to form two lips 7 7 for receiving and holding a sliding plate 10, as best illustrated in Fig. 5.
9 9 represent two circular openings formed through the flat part 6 of the section 4, of such a size as to permit the head of the screw 16 and lug 15 carrying said screw to pass therethrough.
10 represents a sliding plate movable upon the flat portion 6 of the section at, and is held against the same by means of the lips '7. Circular openings 11 are formed in the sliding plate 10 corresponding in size to the openings 9, and leading from the said openings 11 are elongated slots 12 of less width and extending in the same direction.
A small pin or projection 8 is fastened to the section 1 for limiting the movement of the sliding plate 10 in one direction and acts as a stop for the same, causing the openings 9 and 11 to register with one another and permit the head 17 of the adjustable screw -to enter the same. A pin 13 is secured to the upper surface of the sliding plate 10, by means of which the same is operated or moved in either direction, as may be desired, for looking or unlocking the sections 4 and 5. The elongated openings 12 serve to lock the two sections of the binder when the sliding plate is moved in one direction, causing said portion to come in contact with the smaller or screw portion 16 of the adjustable screw, and thereby firmly lock the several parts together.
The opposite removable section of the binder consists of a long strip of metal 5 of such length as to conform to the length of the book, and to the same are vertically secured two posts 15 15 and suitably threaded to re ceive screws 16, the object of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
The screws 16 may be lengthened or shortened, according to the number of sheets to be bound together, by turning the same or heads 17 thereof, which will cause the said screws to move in or out from the posts 15, thereby adapting themselves to any thickness or 11 umber of sheets.
In the modification shown in Fig. i the adjustable screws 16 screw into the plate 5, thereby dispensing with the posts 15, as be fore described, the working of the remaining parts being the same.
The two sections 4 and 5 are fastened in any convenient manner to the cover of the book, and after so fastened may be covered withany suitable binding material, in order to give the book a finished appearance.
\Vhcn the book is open, as shown in Fig. 1, any number of sheets may be added or removed, as may be desired, lengthening or shortening the screws 16 accordingly, and the opposite section 4; brought in connection wit-h the section 5 carrying the leaves. Before the sections are brought together the sliding plate 10 is placed in the position shown in Fig. 3, in which view the holes 9 11 register with one another and allow the head 17 of the screw 16 to enter and pass the same. The sections so united may be locked by sliding the plate 10 in one direction, as shown in Fig. 52, causing the elongated openings 12 to come in contact with the screw portion 16 and firmly lock the several parts of the binder, thereby preventing the heads 17 of the said screws from passing through the removable section at. The leaves 23 may be first punched or perforated, by which means the same may be easily placed and removed from the binder.
This invention is especially applicable and of great advantage to traveling salesmen, where the prices of different articles vary and are changed often, and such changes sent to them on printed sheets, which sheets can be added and the old ones removed with very little inconvenience.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. An adjustable binder for books, pamphlets, and the like, consisting of two sections, one of which is provided with adjustable posts, and the opposite section being flanged to form a groove in which works a sliding device for engaging the said posts, substantially as described.
2. An adjustable binder for books, consisting of two sections, one of which is provided with adjustable posts, and the opposite section being flanged to form a groove and having a sliding locking-plate working in said groove, said last-named section and sliding plate having suitable openings for receiving the posts of the opposite section, substantially as described.
3. An adjustable binder for books, constructed of two sections, one of which is provided with a plate having adjustable posts, and the opposite section consisting of a stationary plate having openings, and a sliding plate movable thereon and provided with openings corresponding to the openings in the stationary plate, said openings in the sliding plate terminating in elongated slots, the openings in said sliding plate and section being adapted-to receive the adjustable posts, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
4. In an adjustable binder for books, the section 5, having adjustable screws 16, in combination with the section 4, consisting of a stationary plate 6, the plate 10, movable'thereon and provided with openings 11, elongated openings leading from the said openings, the said openings 11 registering with the openings 9, formed in the said stationary plate, said openings 11 and 9 being adapted to receive the adjustable screws 16, substantially as described.
5. In an adjustable binder for books, the section 5, provided with posts 15, the screws 16, adjustable therein and having heads 17, in combination with the section 4, consisting of a stationary plate 6, openings 9, formed in the said plate, the stop 8, also attached to thesame, the sliding plate 10, having openings 11 and 12, said openings 9 in the section 4 and openings 11 in the sliding plate being adapted to receive'the adjustable posts, and the lug 13, secured to the upper surface of the said plate for moving the same, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTUS ROSS.
