Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHESLEY DOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cin* cinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in temporary binders, preferably of that type known as post-binders, com rising two cover members, with one provi ed with a series of vertically projecting posts with which the second cover member engages and is adapted to be locked in various positions of adjustment.
The object of my invention is to provide a temporary binder, with a cover member thereof provided with locking instrumentalities, adapted to engage with the posts of a second cover membery and automatically lock in one direction of movement of the cover member upon said osts, with means for withdrawing the locklng instrumentalities from their post engagement.
Another object of my invention is to provide a temporary binder with a removable cover plate, adapted to be supported and adjusted upon a series of posts, said cover plate provided with angularly disposed wedge engaging surfaces adjacent to a post projecting through the same, with wedging means interposed between the posts and such cover plate engaging surface, for locking the cover plate to said post, with means for releasing the wedge from its post engagement.
Another object of my vinvention 1s to provide a temporary binder with a cover member, a resilient wedge supporting member slidable longitudinally thereon, and with the cover member providedrwith a transverse slot to receivef the binder post, with means for locking said post within said slot against horizontal removal.
Another object of my invention 1s to provide a temporary Vbinder with a cover member, a series -of locking instrumentalities supported by said cover member, each adapted to engage a binder post, with means for simultaneously actuating said locking instrumentalities, to release the same from their post engagement.
Another object of my invention is to provide a member of a temporary binderwith binder locking instrumentalities, each -of the locking instrumentalities being provided with a resilient post engaging arm, and means for simultaneously moving said arms to and from their post engaging positions, said means comprising a rotatable cam adapted to engage cam and hook surfaces formed on said locking instrumentalities.
The features of the invention are more fully. set forth in the description of the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a topplan view of the yremovable cover of the binder, showing the rear portion thereof. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the same, illustrating the posts of the second cover member projected through the same. Fig. 3 is a det-ailed bottom plan view of the casing and is contained locking instrumentalities for locking the removable cover member to the posts. Fig. 1 is a view, similar to Fig. 3, but illustrating a modified form thereof.
1 represents the removable cover member of a post binder, adapted to be engaged with and slid upon the posts 2, 3, secured and projected vertically from a second cover member, not shown. The post type of binder is well known in the art, comprising two-cover members, with one having a series of vertically projected posts and the second engaging with said posts and with the -posts adapted to receive the loose sheets and clamped between the cover members. It is common in such type of binders to provide two posts in the series with post-engaging mechanism supported upon the removable cover memberf intermediate of the posts. rThe rear' portion of the removable cover member is' usually formed of a metallic plate to give strength and rigidity thereto and covered with cloth, with the forward portion of the cover member hinged to the plate.
l represents the plate of the removable cover member 1, provided with the transverse slots, adapted to receive the posts 2, 3, to permit the cover to be mounted thereon in a horizontal plane, and 5 represents notches formed 'at right angles thereto and at the terminal of the` latter slots; said notches Iare provided with the inclined surface 6, against Vwhich a wedge engages, to lock'the cover member in any adjusted position upon the posts. upon the wedging instrumentalities in an upward movement of the cover, directing the same toward the posts and releasing them on a downward movement. This enables the cover to be pressed ony the paper to be bound and automatically locked in position.
7 represents a casing secured tothe plate 4, for supporting and housing the cover locking instrumentalities. likewise! laterally slotted coincident with the plate slots to receive the posts. As two sets of locking instrument-alities are illustrated and provided, simultaneously operated and ot duplicate construction, for convenience I will only describe one of' them.
8 represents a slide plate, slidably mounted within the casing 7, with its sides 9 bent at right angles to the base of plate 8, which are provided with the notches 1 0', adapted to receive the lips 11, projected from the casing 7, for maintaining the plate within the casing and' holding the same against displacement, which is quite a convenience in the manufacture of the binders. The plate 8 is notched at the medial portion thereof', so as to straddle the post in one of its positions and lock the cover against removal in a horizontal plane, Fig. 3 showing the plate slid to such position.

rIihe plate 8' has an edge, opposite from the elastic arm, provided with an irregular surface 13@ adapted to be engaged by the hook-shaped end l5v of the oscillating plate 1 4, which in an arc of movement inone direction will move the slide toward its post, and inan opposite or reverse direction engage with the hook 16- of the plate 8, to draw the same toward the aXiS of' plate 14. In moving the plate 8 away from the post, the rol'lfer 5, by reason of its elastic support 12, will be withdrawn from its in.- tervening position between the post and inclined 'surface 6', and moved beyond any binding or engaging position with t-he post. will have moved slightly past its longitudinal central plane, for bringing the same to a dead center, so as to resist any rearward movement of the plate 8 which would accidentally release the locking instrumentalities.
In the modified form, illustrated in Fig. 4, the plate 8 and limb 12 are formed integral and stamped from a single strip of metal with its function and o-peration substantially the same as the two-part form shown in Fig. 3.
It is obvious, that equivalent means may be provided for shifting the locking limb l2 for simultaneously controlling a series ofI such limbs other than the particular cam action herewith illustrated, without departing from the features of my invention.
Having described my invention, I claim l. In a temporary binder, aseries of binder posts, a cover nie-,ber adjustable thereon, Vcomprising a plate notched and provided with an inclined surface adjacent to each post, a wedge member adapted toengage between each *post and adjacent inclined surface of the plate, locking the parts together in anupward movement of the plate and released in a downward movement thereof, and an elasticv arm carrying said wedge member for movin a said wedge member toward' and away rom its post-engaging position. v
2. In a temporary binder, a series of binder posts, a cover member slidable on said posts having an inclined abutment adjacent to each post, an elastic arm at its free end journaling a roller wedge, one arm for each post, with the woeligey adapted tol intervene between the post and abutment, and bind therewith, and means for moving said arm transversely to the plane of the postl todisplace the roller wedge from a post-binding position.

In atemporary binder, aseries of binder posts, a cover member slidable thereon, means fo-r locking said cover to said posts in any adjusted position, comprising a resilient arm slidable within said cover member, with its free end provided with a wedge, adapted to engage said cover and posts and resist upward movement of the cover upon the po-sts, means adapted to engage said arm, for sliding the same to move said wedge out of locking position.
6. In a temporary binder, a pair of binder posts, a cover member slidable thereon, comprising a plate having notches to receive said posts, a pair of slides mounted on said plate intermediate of said notches, each provided with a resilient wedge arm, adapted to engage with a respective post and inclined surface formed in said plate, and means for simultaneously moving said slides in a direction opposite each other for withdrawing the wedge arms from their post engagement.
7 A binder of the nature disclosed, combining a base, an impaling post projecting therefrom, a follower having a notch eX- tended from one edge thereof to receive the post, a resilient limb and a rigid limb unitarily movable upon the follower, the one respectively to bind with the post, and the second to close the notch, and an oscillating member engaging said unitary limb member to move the same toward and from their functioning position. v
8. A binder o-f the nature disclosed, combining a base, a pair of impaling posts projected therefrom, a follower notched to receive therethrough said posts, a pair of movable members, one fo-r each post unitarily co-mbining a resilient element having a roller journaled thereon adapted to wedge between a respective post and the follower to bind the same to resist movement of the follower on the post in one direction, and release in a reverse movement, and a rigid element functioning to gap the notch, and a manually oscillated member on said follower having hook limbs adapted to engage and interlock with said movable members to simultaneously move the same.
9. A locking device, comprising a plate having a pair of openings, each adapted to receive a post and with an inclined surface spaced from the post, a pair of resilient members movable on said plate, each journaling a roller adapted to wedge between one of said inclined surfaces and posts to bind the posts and plate against movement of the parts independently in one direction.

A binder of the nature disclosed, combining a base, a pair of impaling posts projected therefrom, a follower notched to receive therethrough said posts, a pair of movable members, a cover plate upon said follower forming a slide way for said movable members, each movable member unitarily combining a resilient element and a rigid element, the resilient element having a roller journaled thereon, adapted to wedge between a respective post and follower to bind the parts in one direction of movement of the follower on the posts and automatically release in a reverse movement, the rigid element functioning to close the notch entrance, and means for simultaneously moving said movable members in opposing directions toward and from the posts.
