UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
ABNER LINWOOD I-IOLTON, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
NOTE-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 700,648, dated May 20, 1902.
Application filed January 9, 1902. Serial No. 89,075. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABNER-LmwooD HoL- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Tablets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in tablets in the form of note-books, and especially in books of such character designed for use by stenographers in taking notes; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my note-book as in use. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view, the base-plate being partiallybroken away. Fig. 3 is a detail per spective view of the base-plate, showing the latch-plate in unlocked position and one of the bows detached. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan View of the base-plate and latch-plate, showing the ends of the bows secured by the latchplate. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the base-plate with one of the fixed posts in place and differing slightlyin construction from the posts shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one side of one of the bows formed to fit the post shownin Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 is a detail bottom plan view, partly broken away, showing a somewhat different form of latch from that shown in Fig. 3.
The note-sheets A may be ruled, as is usual for stenographic use, and are provided with perforations a to receive the fixed posts and the bows. The fixed posts B are mounted on or otherwise suitably secured to the baseplate O and are made in cross-section in the form of segments of a circle and for interlocking engagement with the bows D. The posts B are arranged adjacent to perforations E, formed through the base 0 and through which project the ends of the bows D, the latter being provided with notches cl for engagement by the latch-plate operating beneath the plate 0. In Figs. 1,2, and 3 the bow and posts are formed, as best shown in Fig. 3, the upper ends of the posts B being notched at I) and the bows D being formed with the tenons D to fit along the inner sides of the posts B, the shoulders cl at the upper ends of the tenons D being formed to fit in the notches b in the upper ends of theposts B, thus interlock ing the bows D and the posts B, as will be understood from Fig. 3. The bows D project at their ends in position for engagement by the latch-plate F, which slides longitudinally in a dovetail groove in the under side of the base-plate O and is arranged to enter the notches d when the parts are in the position shown in full lines, Fig. 4, and has notches f, which may be adjusted to coincide with the openings E in the base-plate when it is desired to apply or remove the bows D. The plate F may be easily adjusted longitudinally in the guide-groove O of the plate 0, and its movement's may be limited by a stop F, projecting through a slot 0 in the base-plate C, as shown in Fig.3. By using the plate F, I am able to lock both bows by the same latch. "It will be understood, however, that independent latches maybe used for each bow,
and where desired the latch may be a pivoted plate, as shown in Fig. 7, in which the plate G is pivoted at G between its ends and may be adjusted at its'opposite ends into and out of engagement with the ends of the bows.
In Fig. 3 the bow is interlocked to the fixed posts by notching the upper ends of the posts and forming-the bows with projections to enter said notches. This interlocking, however, may be accomplished in different ways, such as shown in Figs. 5, and 6, in which the post is grooved longitudinally at H, and the bow is provided alongside its notched tenon with a tongue or rib I to enter the groove H.
In Fig. 1 I illustrate abase-board J, which is as wide asthe base-plate and as long as the note-sheets and is designed for use when it is desired to furnish a stiff backing for taking dictation standingor'in any place where a desk is not convenient; This baseboard may be of metal, wood, or other suitable material and is preferably detachably connected with the base-plate O, a convenient means for securing such end being illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, wherein the baseboard J is provided with an undercut groove J, extending across its face and receiving the base-plate O, which extends at its opposite edge sufficiently beyond the post B to engage in the groove of the base-board J. The baseplate can be conveniently removed from the- ICO groove in the base-board and turned end for end, this being especially desirable in reversing the base-plate when the stenographer has written through the book on one side of the sheets and desires to readjust the book to the base-board so the other sides of the sheets of the book may be written upon.
It will be noticed the fixed posts are important, as they hold the note-sheets together when the bows are removed as well as when the bows are locked to the base-plate, and when the bows are locked to the base-plate the posts B rendering the bows more substantial and improving their connection with the base-plate, the posts being immovable and the bows being interlocked with the posts as Well as being latched in connection with the base-plate. b in the post B are made somewhat in the form of a saw-tooth and being entered by the projections d prevent any displacement of the bows when the latter are secured by the latch devices before described. Furthermore, the form in cross-section of the tenons (Z' and the posts B is half-round, and when fitted together they form cylindrical posts, fitting the openings at in the note-sheets. This cylinder is larger than the diameter of the bow-rod at the crown of the bowsin order to facilitate the adjustment of the note-sheets from side to side of the bows, this being effected by making the bows with their crown portions reduced in thickness.
As shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, at, and 5, the opposite edges of the base-plate G are beveled or sloped off to an edge, this being desirable to avoid any abrupt bending of the note-sheets where theyoverlie the edges of the base-plate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The improvement in note-books herein described, comprising the base-plate sloped or beveled off at its opposite edges, provided with openings through which the ends of the bows may be passed and with fixed posts adjacent to said openings, the bows fitting alongside said fiXed posts, and devices for securing the bows in connection with the base-plate, substantially as set forth.
2. In a device, substantially as described, the combination with the base-plate, of the half-round posts thereon, the bows having half-round tenons lapping alongside the said posts, and means for securing the bows, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with the base-plate,aud the posts thereon, of the bows interlocking with the posts, and devices for securing the bows to the base-plate, substantially as set forth.
It will also be noticed the notches 4. The combination with the base-plate hav ing openings through which the ends of the bows may project, the bows projecting at their ends through said openings and latch devices for securing the bows to the base-plate, substantially as set forth. a

The combination with the base-plate having openings for the ends of the bows, and the posts adjacent to said openings, of the bows lapping alongside the posts and projecting through the openings in the base-plate, and latch devices beneath the base-plate for se-' curing the bows, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with a base-plate having openings for the ends of the bow and posts adjacent to said openings, the bow fitting alongside and interlocking with the posts and projecting through the openings in the baseplate, and the latch-plate beneath the baseplate and' movable into and out of engagement with the bow, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination with the base-plate and the posts thereon, and notched in their upper ends, of the bow provided at its ends with tenons fitting alongside the posts and at the upper ends of said tenons with shoulders having projections entering the notches of the posts, and means for securing the bow, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination of the base-plate provided with openings for the ends of the how, the bow projecting at its ends through said opening, and the slide-plate beneath the baseplate and arranged to secure the bow, substantially as set forth.
9. The combination of the base-plate provided in its under side with a groove, and having openings for the ends of the bow, the bow projecting at its ends through said openings and the latch-plate operating in the groove in the under side of the base-plate and movable into and out of engagement with the bow, substantially as set forth.
10. The combination with the base-plate provided with openings for the bow and adjacent thereto with posts, the bow fitting at its ends alongside said posts and projecting through the openings in the base-plate, and the latch beneath the base-plate for securing the bow, substantially as set forth.
11. In a note-book, the combination of the base-board, provided with a transverse undercut groove, and the base-plate fitted to said groove and movable into and out of the same and provided with bows arranged transversely the length of the base-plate for securin g the'note-sheets, substantially as set forth.
