T. WOHLMUTH.
GANDLE HOLDER.
No. 441,625. Patented Nov. 25, 1 890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODOR XVOHLMUTH, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY, ASSIGNOR OF I ONE-HALF TO FRANCIS ZOELOH, OF SAME PLACE.
CAN DLE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,625, dated November 25,1890.
' Application filed November 18,1889. Serial No. 331,129. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODOR WoHLMUrH, asubject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Vienna, in the Province of Lower Austria, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candle-Holders; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Referring. to the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing the upper part of a candlestick with my improved candle-holder applied, and Fig. 2 is a view of the blank from which the holder is made.
It has been the practice heretofore either to reduce the diameter of a candle by cutting the end thereof or increase such diameter by wrapping paper around the candle to secure it in a candlestick or other socket or holder that is either too small to receive the same or too large for the candle. Either mode of se curing the candle in its holder is not only inconvenient, but it is often the case that the candle is insecurely held in the holder and liable to fall out.
The object of this invent-ion is to provide an auxiliary holder or attachment for use with candlesticks or the socketed holders of candelabra or bracket-lights, whether of uniform or of varying dimensions, for use with candles of uniform or of varying dimensions.
To these ends the invention consists ina holder having the form of a truncated cone, or substantially so, and provided with a series of flexible or elastic tongues.
The invention further consists in the construction of the sheet-metal blank from which such holder or auxiliary holder is made, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
The holder is constructed of sheet metal and of a single piece from a blank B, Fig. 2, of substantially polygonal form and having one edge scalloped or provided with teeth I), and is slitted longitudinally from a point near its longitudinal center to the edge opposite to that on which the teeth I) are formed to form a series of elastic tongues 17. If the blank is doubled or folded along the dottedline Z, and then formed into a more or less tapering tube, the teeth 17 will lie inside of the tube on aline about midway of the length of the slitted portion or the elastic tongues b. the holder is formed by bending the teeth I) at right angles, as shown in Fig. 1, thus forming a raised bottom within the holder, so that but a comparatively small portion of the can dle is wasted or lost. of the tongues 19' are then bent inward, formin g clamping-teeth 19 between which the candle is securely held. As the elastic tongues yield, candles varying in diameter within certain limits may be securely seated in the holder, and as said holder is made tapering it will fit candle-bearings of varying diameter. WVhen such a holder is inserted into a candle-bearing, the tongues Z) are folded or forced inwardly, the tongues b gripping the candle and holding it securely.
From the above description it will be seen that the construction of the holder is very simple and inexpensive and efficient, as well as convenient for use.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A candle-holder consisting of a tapering sleeve formed by a series of elastic tongues 12, and an inner tubular portion provided with teeth I), bent at right angles to form the bottom of the holder at a point about midway of the length thereof, said holder being constructed of a single piece of sheet metal, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THEODOR WOHLMUTI'I. Witnesses:
