Description

n y a MAX J. D.- BURDI'CK, OF SHWAY, RHODE ISLAND.
'IMPROVED BLINDTSLAT FASTENING.
Specification formingpart of' Letters Patent No. 44,072, dated September U, 1864.
.ToaZZ whomv it may concern:
Be it known that I, J.'D. BURDIGK, of Ashway, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for Blind-Slate; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and'- exact description of the same,
jreference being lhad to the accompanying.
drawings, makinga part of this specification, in which` Figure 1 is an inner side view of a window.-V blind with my invention applied to it. Fig. 2
is'a vertical section of the same taken in the the line :v,-Fig. 1. Y
rSimilar'letters of reference indicate corresponding parts'in the two'tigures.
This invention relates -to a new and imvvproved; fastening for securing the slats of window-blinds in an open or closed state or at any lpoint between those two positions.
r The object of the invention is to obtain a simple fastening for the purpose specified, oie which may be constructed at a reasonable cost, not be liable to get out of repair, and
one whichwill not interfere at any time or in any position in which it may be adjusted with the window-sash.
To this end the. invention consists in the employment or. use 0f a bent lever, a spring, and connecting-rod arranged and applied in such a manner that the lever in operating theslats is turned or adjusted in a plane parallel `with 'the window-blindyas hereinafter described.A j i i f -l 'To enable those skilled in the art to fully i nn'derstandand construct mygfinvention, Iwill g A representsy a window-blind,- which `may .beconstructed in the'ordinary way, the slats being designated bye, andthe rod `tofwhich thesl'ats are attached being designated by b.
. Bgis a case or socket, which is attached by screws c to the lower crossbar, d, of the blind. This case orjsocket is constructed of niet-al,
-open' atitsupper end-and having a Slat, e', in' its-bottom to admit of 'the working of a bent lever, (l, which .is litted loosely o n a rod or iaxis, D, in the case or socket B, the rod or axis D being at right angles with the crossbar d, and .the lever C ,when turned or operated, moving in a plane parallel with the blind A., The longer arm, j', of the bentlever C is provided with a knob, g, and-the `end of' theJ shorter arm, 71v is 4perforated to receive a hook, i, at the lower end of a rcd, E, the upper end of which is attached to one side of the Slat-rod b by a screw, j. 0n `the rod or axis-D of the bent lever C there is placed an india-rubber spring, E, one end of which bears against the inner side of the ease or socket B and the other against the,
lever 0,-'as shown clearly in. Fig. 2. The upper edge of the outer side of the case or socket B is provided with a' notch or recess,
7c, to receive the long arm f of the, lever G when said arm is in a vertical position.
From the above description it will be seen that by turning the lever O the rod E will actuate or turn the blind-slats a', and when the bent lever C is turned tothe left to the extent ot its movement, -as shown in tint in both tigures, the blind-slats will be secured in afclosed state, and' when turned to the right to the full extent of said movement, as shown in red outline, thes'lats will be secured in an open state. y (See Fig. 2, in which the slats are shown in an open state in red outline.) When the lever O is turned so that the long arm f of the lever will t in the notch or recess k, the slatsl will 'be secured in a halfopen state. The spring 4E' keeps the arm f in thenotch or recess It, and when it is desired to turn the arml f of the lever O out from the notch or recess, the lever C is first pressed a little inward, so as to compress the spring El and admit ot' the arm j'bcing freed .from the notch or recess. .The bent lever C will turn casually when the slats af'are in an Vopen and a closed state, for the reason that the short arm h vot' the lever, when the slats a 'are in such positions, is in line, or nearly so,
Awith the rod or axis D, thereby forming a lock.l
` lhe rod E hasa semicircularbend, t, made in'1t near its lower end, so that the rod will clear the spring E when the lever C is turned to the right and the slats a are in an open state.
- I would remark that if necessary the upper edge of the outer side of the case or socket B may have a notch orfrecess similar to k made init between 7c and the ends of' the' case or .-socket, so that the slats may be secured in an intermediate position between ahalf-open and;
an'open and a closed state.
In vt'zon'se'quenceof operating the rod E lthrough the medium. of` the lever C, arranged as `sho w`n,nof.,partsofl the fastenlng can a1,-
any time come in' Contact with the window Sash, as they do not project fer enough ont;

so` as 'oo turn or Work in -iI-lanefpqraillel there-z v with, inrcolnbinntion with the rod E, attached to the shorbarxn h ofthe lever C, and to the Slat-rod b, and the spring E', fitted on the rod or axis D of .thelever, between said lever and the inner side ofthe ea'se or socket B. substantially as and for. the purpose herein set;
forth.
