UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
ADOLPHUS D. GOODWIN, OF SALEM, VIRGINIA.
SHUTTER-BOWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,000, dated October 21, 1890.
v Application filed May 26, 1890. Serial No. 353,179- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADOLPHUS D. GooDWIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salem, State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter- Workers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to theaccompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of the invention and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 isa vertical longitudinal section of the worker.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of devices known as shutter-workers, having for its object to provide for the convenient and ready manipulation or opening and closing of the shutters of a window and the holding of the same open at any desired angle; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter disclosed.
In carrying out my invention I employ a tube A and a slide or rod A, telescoping the former and adj ustably engaged therewith by a set-screw B, thus rendering the connection The tube A is pivoted at its outer end to the shutter, a pin a passing transversely and vertically through the former and bearing in the top and bottom plates or ears of a preferably triangular bracket 6, secured directly to the inside of the shutter, close to its inner lower corner edge. The rod or bar A at its outer end is preferably fiat, and is provided with an aperture, curved or bent downward and pivoted to the Window-sill, a pivot-screw a passing through said aperture and entering the latter. The tube A is long enough to guard the sliding end of the bar A.
It will be seen that by loosening the setscrew B the shutter is permitted to be thrown open to the maximum extent back against the house-wall, and by again tightening the screw the shutter is there held to prevent its being blown to or otherwise accidentally closed, or the shutter may be retained in open position at any intermediate angle by means of the connection and set-screw. When the shutters are wholly closed, it is obvious that by simply tightening the set-screw the shutters are securely locked or fastened, thus dispensing with shutter-fasteners as ordinarily employed. When the set-screw is loosened, the slide-connection operates automatically, and may serve as a handle device for moving the shutter to desired position.
In order to prevent the set-screw from beoomin g casually removed and lost, it is provided with a stop or catch at its inner end, as indicated at 0;, said stop being received when the set-screw is loosened in an inside seat of the tubular slideway, the seat or recess being indicated at ,2. It is important to provide this guard against the loss of the set-screw, which is liable, if detached, to fallout of the window.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The extensible and contractible shutterworker consisting of the tube pivotally connected to the shutter and having an enlargement at one end provided with a recess or seat at one side of its bore, the slide or rod telescoping said tube and having a downward bent or curved outer end pivotally connected to the window-sill, and the set or holding screw working in said enlargement of the tube and having a laterally-extended stop at its inner end engaging said recess or seat and held therein when disengaged from said rod, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affiit my signature in presence of two witnesses.
A. D. GOODWIN.
