CONSTRUCTION OF SHOE-UPPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,705, dated October 21, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN S. MCKEN- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in the Construction of a Shoe- Upper; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object an improvement in the construction of a shoe-upper to adapt the upper for a blind lacing as for a novel lacing, which forms the subject-matter of a separate accompanying application.
My invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combinations, hereinafter described, and more particularly hereinafter claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a View in section on the line a: 00, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a modification showing ablind shank.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent the two sides of a shoe-upper to be laced together. The exterior portion of the upper is cut in the usual form and manner.
My invention contemplates the union therewith upon one of said sides of an additional inner facing B, consisting of a strip of leather or any desired fabric engaged with the outer or main portion of the upper, the same being preferably stitched in place, as shown by the line a. The outer or main portion of the upper is faced with an additional thickness of suitable material, as at a, if desired, to give proper strength thereto and hold the upper to its place, the essential 'idea of my invention being to provide an upper with inner and outer facings to receive a series of shanks 0 between them, the extremities of the shanks being engaged with the said facings, respectively, in any desired manner, so as to permit a lacing-cord Y being passed about said shank back and forth from one side to the other. These shanks may have rollers B journaled thereon, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or, as shown in Fig. 3, the rollers may be fixed to the shank. The opposite side of the upper is provided with an additional inner facing B in a similar manner and for a similar purpose. The inner facing 13 is extended to constitute at the same time a tongueE to lap under the meeting edges of the upper. Where it is desired to have the shanks concealed, so as not to be visible from the exterior surface, they are engaged between the facing B and the facing a, as shown in Fig. 3. A shoe-upper so formed may have the eyelet holes punched simultaneouslyin the outer and inner facings to receive the shanks.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A shoe-upper having, in combination with the two sides to be brought together in lacing, an inner facing 13, secured to one of said sides, a tongue secured to the opposite side, fastening devices between the outer and inner faces of one side piece and between the outer face and the tongue of the other side piece, and a lacing-cord, substantially as set forth.
2. A shoe-upper having, in combination with the two sides to be brought together in lacing, inner facings secured to said sides near their edges, shanks engaged between the inner faces and the sides of the shoe-upper, said shanks concealed beneath the sides of said shoe-upper, and a lacing-cord, substantially as set forth.
