H. LIEBERTHAL SUSPENDERS.
No. 438,693. Patented 0613.21.1890.
UNITED l STATES yPATENT OFFICE.
HYMAN LIEBERTHAL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,693, dated October 21, -1890. Application filed April 26, 1890. Serial No. 349,693. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IIYMAN LIEBERTHAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a reduced perspective view. Fig. 2 is a detail, being a front elevation of the suspender-end. Fig. 3 is a detail showing the blank for forming the fastener. Fig. 4. is a detail showing the blank for forming the suspender-end. Fig. 5 is a section at line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail showing the device for attaching `the suspender-strap. Fig.7 is a vertical section through the spring-catch. Fig. 8 is a vertical section at line 8 8 of Fig. 1. Figs. 9 and l0 show a modified form of the spring-catch.
This invention relates to Suspenders, and has for its object to provide an adjustable device for securing the suspender-end to the webbing and a device for attaching the suspender-straps, which I accomplish as illustrated in the drawings, and as hereinafter described.
That which I claim as new will be pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Arcpresents the webbing. The webbingA constitutes the usual shoulderstraps.
BB represent the attaching-pieces, one being provided for each end of the webbing A. Each piece B consists of a piece of leather or other suitable material, and is provided with a transverse slot a and with a wing b.
C C represents the fasteners. Each fastener is provided with a transverse slot c, corresponding with the slot a of the attachingpiece B, and is provided with downwardlyprojecting teeth d on the upper edge of the slot c. The fasteners C are secured to the attaching-pieces B by eyelets e, as best shown in Fig. 2. The wing b of each of the attaching-pieces B is bent around back of and secured to the attaching-piece B at the line of stitching. (Indicated at f in Fig. 4.) The lower end of the metallic fastener C is provided with wings g, which are bent around to form a keeper. (Indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2.) The middle portion of the lower end of each fastener is provided with a slot or notch h.
D D are the suspender-straps. Each suspender-strap D has secured at its upper end a slotted piece E. To each slottedpiece E is secured by an eyelet 'i a spring-catch F. These spring-catches F are adapted to enter the lower end of the fasteners C, and are provided with proj ections j to engage with the slot or notch h in such fasteners. The webbing A passes through the slot c in the fastener C and the slot a ih the attaching-piece B, and is held therein by the engagement of the teeth d. In order to adjust the attaching-pieces B on the webbing A or to withdraw the webbing A therefrom, the portion of the webbing above the attaching-piece B must be bent downward until the teeth on the fastener C are disengaged from the webbing, and the lower endof the webbing must be raised, when the webbing may be drawn in either direction through the slots a c. The wing?) forms a keeper for the lower end of the webbing and prevents accidental slipping or moving of the attaching-pieces B upon the webbing A.
The fastener C is of such form and is so placed on the attaching-piece B that it cannot be brought into contact with the clothing of the wearer in such manner as to injure the clothing. The ends of the webbing passing through the slots a c are held flat against the under sides of the pieces B, so that they do not form thick folds or ridges like those formed by the use of buckles, which render the use of buckles somewhat objectionable.
The straps D may be easily separated from the fasteners C and attaching-pieces B by pressing upon the spring-'catch F, so as to withdraw its projections j from the slot or notch h.
The attaching-pieces B, fasteners C, and straps D constitute what are ordinarily termed suspender-ends.
In Figs. 9 and 10 the modified form of the spring-catch F is shown, in which its proj ection j engages with the notch or slot j from without instead of from within.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a suspender, the combination of an attaching part B, having a slot a, the plate C, secured in a stationary position on the slotted IOC attaching part and provided with a slot c, coinciding with the slot a and having a series of teeth d on its upper edge which project below the upper edge of the slot in the attaching part, and the straps D, having a suitable attaching device, substantially as described.
2. The combination, With a suspender-Webbing A, of attaching-pieces B, having trans- Io verse slots a, fasteners C, having transverse slots c and teeth d on the upper edges of the slots c, projecting below the upper edges of the slots a, straps D, spring-catches F, having projections j, notches or recesses h in the fasteners C, adapted to engage the projection I5 j, and Wing g, substantially as specified.
