SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,775, dated October '7, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER COLUM- BUS ECHOLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Granger, in the county of VVilliamson and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to plows; and it consists in certain improvementsin the construction of the same, having for its object to ad mit of the adjustment of the heel-bar of the plow with relation to the standard of the same, and also to provide the said heel-bar with an adjustable knife or cutter which shall serve as a rudder to prevent the plow from swerving to either side during operation.

WVit-h these ends in view the invention consists, specifically, in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow equipped with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with dotted lines, showing various adjustments of the heel-bar and rudder-knife. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.

The pattern of plow to which my invention in the accompanying drawings has been shown applied is known as the Georgia Sweep Plow, and it comprises the plow beam or stock 1, having the handles 2, and the standard, which is composed of two separate plates 3 3, which are connected above and below the beam by means of clamping-bolts 4;, thereby enabling the said standard to be adjusted at any desired position upon the beam without puncturing the latter for the passage of bolts.

5 designates a brace, which is mounted pivotally between the plates composing the standard, from whence it extends upwardly and rearwardly to the rear end of the beam, where it is secured by means of a vertical bolt 6.

7 designates the heel-bar, which is mounted pivotally between the lower ends of the standard-plates. Said heel-bar is provided at its 5 rear end with a vertical slot 8, in which the rudder-knife 9 is mounted in such a manner as to be vertically adjustable to enable it to enter the ground to any desired depth. Said rudder-knife is shaped somewhat like an ordinary eolter; but its shape may be modified when so desired.

Secured pivotally to opposite sides of the heel-bar by means of a transverse rivet 10 are a pair of straps or braces 11, the upper ends of which are provided with slots 12. 13 is a bolt extending transversely through the slots 12 and through a transverse perforation in the brace 5, thereby enabling the straps 11 to be raised or lowered so as to adjust the heelbar to any desired angle with relation to the standard. A plow-blade let, which may be of any desired construction, is attached in the usual manner to the lower end of the standard.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. By loosening thebolt 13 the heel-bar may be adjusted to any desired angle with relation to the standard and the said heel-bar may be kept parallel to the beam. The plow may thus be adjusted to run to any desired depth in the ground. The rudder-knife may likewise be adjusted to run in the ground to any desired depth, and will serve to guide the plow in a straight line and prevent it from swerving to either side without trouble or expenditure of strength on the part of the operator.

The general construction of my improved plow is simple and inexpensive, and it is durable and easily adjusted in any desired manner.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim- 1. In a plow, the combination of the standard, the pivoted heel-bar, means for adj 11sting the latter with relation to the standard, and a rudder-knife mount-ed adjustably in a vertical slot at the rear end of the heel-bar, substantially as set forth.
