Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
WILLIAM WEBB, oF WATEEEUEY, CONNECTICUT, AssICNoR To THE sCovILLE MANUFACTURINGr COMPANY, oF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.
Specification forming part. ot' Letters Patent No. 43,746, dated August 2, 1864.
i a hinge in an open state, constructed according to my invention, x m indicating the plane yof section Fig. 2, a side view of the same in a closed state; Fig. 3, an open view of the same in a partially-finished state.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of hinges which are formedput of a sheet or rolled metal plate, and are corn- Inonly termed butthinges.
The invention consists in providing said h;nges with a stop, constructed during the process of their manufacture, and in such a manner that a combined hinge and stop will be obtainedat a cost not appreciably greater than that ot' the hinges constructed separately or without the stop.
The invention is designed for those hinges which are to be applied to desk and box lids, and to other articles in which the door or lid is not required to be opened at a distance greater than will bring the leaves 0f the hinges at or about at right angles with each other.
vTo enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe-it.
A A represent the two leaves ofa hinge, which may be connected together by a pintle, ux, in the usual way. These leaves are cut out from asheet or rolled metal plate, and one of them, A, has a rectangular' recess, a, eut in its outer edge, said recess being made at the time the leatl is cut out. The other leaf, A', has a projection, '1), extending outward at right angles from the center of its outer edge, the end of b being provided with a cross-head, c. This projection b and its cross-head c are c'ut out from the plate simultaneously with the leaf A', and the projection b is of such a width that it may t in the recess a ot' the leaf A, when bent or curved, soas to extend over the outer edge of said leaf, as shown more particularly in Fig. 1.
The cross-head c is ot' such a length thatit` invention a combined hinge and` stop are obtained, and Without augmenting in an appreciable degree the cost of manufacture above that of a hinge alone.
The invention is capable of very general application, but is chieiiy designed for small hinges, such as are used on boxes, desks, and various other articles in which it is desirable to employ stops to control the extent ot' the movement ot' a cover, lid, &c.
Having thus describedmy invention. what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hinge provided with a stop formed during the process ofthe manufacture of the hinge, and out of the same parts or pieces composing the same, substantially as herein described.
WILLIAM WEBB.
