Description

ed ge ot' the UNITED STATES APATENT OFFICE.
O. F. WALKER, OF BENFORDS STORE P. O., PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRAPS FOR. HOLDING DOWN PANTALOONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,727, dated August 2, 1864; antedated June 14, 1864.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, O. F. WALKER, of Ben- Vfordis Store P. O., Somerset county,-State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Device for Holding Down Pants for the Purpose of Keeping out of Shoes Snow, Dirt, &c.; and I do hereby declare that these specifications give a full and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
Figure lis an elevation of the inside of a foot. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ot' the outside ofthe foot. Fig. 3 is a view of the device detached from the foot. Fig. 3 is a section of the lower part or hem of one of the legs ot the pants, showing the small sticks in the inside.
In the accompanying drawings, A shows the shoe or foot 5 B, the lower part of one of the legs of the pants. C, D, and E show the device to hold the pants close round the shoe or foot. C is a tube, with a slot or opening, d, large enough to be easily slipped onto the lower edge of the fold j' with the small sticks b b in on the outside ot' the foot, and so small that it will hold over the sticks. D is a similar tube, smaller than C, to slip onto the lowerhem with the stick a in on the inner side ot' the foot. E is a cord that connects the clasps C and D.
a is a stick in the edge or the hem in the inner part of the foot. b b are smaller sticks in the edge ofthe hem in the fold on the outer side of the foot. These sticks a and b b are designed for holds for the clasps O and D, and are left to remain in the lower edge of the hem a, on the inner side of the foot, and b b on the outer side, so far apart as to bring one on the upper layer and the other on lower layer ot' the fold; or it might answer to have the sticks in upper layers of the fold and slip the clip on the two upper layers. These sticks in the hem will not be noticed, and therefore can remain there. f shows the fold on the outer side of the foot.
The clasps or tubes can be made of any sticks a and b bin the hem, as already shown,
make the fold on the outer side sufficiently large to bring the edge of the pant-leg as `tight around the footas desired, hold the edges of the fold with the sticks b b in evenly together, and slip on the larger clasp, .C then bring the cord round under the foot and fasten the smaller clasp on the lower edge of the hem with the stick a in on the inner side of the foot. Thus it will be seen that by this simple device a person can in a most convenient manner and in a moment ot' time put on this device, which will effectually shut out snow, dirt, cold, 85e., or keep down pants when desired, and when not needed can be taken off more easily than to open a button, and, being so compact, can be very conveniently carried in a pocket.
I do not claim, broadly, straps sewed or buttoned to the pants and passing round the foot, as I am aware that such have before been known; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The device composed of the parts O, D, and E when the same are used in combination with the sticks a b b, or equivalents, secured in the heinof the pants, substantially as herein set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing' witnesses.
C. F. WALKER.
Witnesses It. F. Oseoon, R. H. WAREIELD.
