Description

UNITED STATES MILLS ALLENDER,
IMPROVED MATERIAL' PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW: YORK, N. Y.
FGR F-l LLING'SHELLS.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent.No. 43,667, dated August 2, 1864; antedateu December 27, 1863. v
lo allwhom it may concern: I
' Be it known/that I, MILLS LCALLEND'ER, of the State and city ofN'eWYoi-k, have invented a new and improved material for tiling hollow shot, shell, and shrapnetcalled'. asphalt, ,asphaltum, pitchfl-bitumen,
or the like substances derived from the distil-j lation of coal, coal-tar, crude coal-oil, certain earth-oils o'r petroleum, and bitumens.- These artificial articles are. respectively a residue after distilling bit" the more. volatile products from coal-tar, crude coal-oil, petroleum, earth soils, and bitumem v V To enable others skilled: in the art to manu-v factur'e and use my invention, I will proceed -to describe its application and operation.
I construct my-shot, shell, or shrapnel in any I of theknown forms, and fill them withth'ematerial-orm aterialsabovespeci fied, ei th'ersim ple or combined with eachother, as may be desirahie, or combined within organic substances .such as nite r,'sulphur, charcoal, phosphorus,
coaldust, plumba-go, lamp-black or graphite,
and plaster-of-paris, or the like, to increase its density, hardness and com bustibility, and destructive qnalitie'sfand also withorganic substance'ssuchas sawdust, chaff, cottonftow,
tan-bark, orthe like, to render the flame more;
adhesive and persistent, the proportions [of these combinations to be variable, according to the requirements-needed. shrapnel it serves to fill up the interstices be tween the balls, holding them firmly to be bored out 'for the explosive charge, and when. shattered by explosion it cleans from the balls and sh'elli'easily and cleanly, so the shot or balls will act uniformly. in melting and pourin g itj'does not give o'fi" those suiiocatingfumes so. destructive tohealthth'at sulphur does.and the shell does not need to he placed inboiling;
water to insure its fillingiunitormly, as is the case with sulphur, in this and all cases forming a cheap anduseful' substitute for sulphur, i -What I claim as lily-invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
a The use anda'pplicatiou of asphalt, asphalt um, or the like, or any of-the solid products arising from the distillation of coal, crude coaloil, coal-tar, rock-oils, or petroleum, natural' When used .to: fill-
