Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BUISSON PIERRE, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED ARTIFICIAL FUEL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 42,163, dated April 5, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BUIssON PIERRE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved mode of making out of anthracite dust good light-burning coal or an imitation of Liverpool coal; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the said invention.
The nature of my invention consists in mixing with anthracite-coal dust the residuum of petroleum distillation in a pulverized state, and then submitting the same to a sufficient heat to melt such residuum and cause the particles of coal to adhere together. There remains in the still after the distillation of petroleum a thick residuum of a nature resembling coke and tar. This is the material I employ. The same is to be ground and mixed with the coal-dust in the desired proportionfrom four to ten per cent. The mass is then placed in molds of any desired shape or size,
| or in pans, and subjected to a sufficient heat to cause the petroleum residuum to melt and unite the particles of coal. The mass may be pressed to produce greater consolidation. If
the proportion of petroleum residuum is large,
the coal will burn like Liverpool or cannel coal; if smaller, the fire will be'nearly like the ordinary anthracite.
I do not claim tar or asphaltum for uniting the anthracite-coal dust into blocks or lumps; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Uniting anthracite-coal dust with petroleum J. BURNIER, F. F. BADOYE.
