UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTHA E. HALL, OFCRAWFORDSVILLE, INDIANA.
DEVICE. FOR FITTING AND DRAFTING GARMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,301, dated August 26, 1890.
Application filed April l, 1890. Serial No. 346,193. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTHA E. HALL,'a-citi zen of the United States, residing at Crawfordsville, Montgomery county, State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Fitting and Drafting Garments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for facilitating the drafting or delineation of garmentpatterns, and especially of waists and basques for womens dresses. A number of elastic ribbons are so arranged and adjusted in a frame or harness as to indicate the several seams or bounding edges of the pattern-pieces, which can be marked on pieces of gauze'temporarily applied to said harness.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure I is a front perspective view, and Fig. Il is a back perspective view, of said frame. Fig. III
' represents the preferred marking on straps 8.
My invention comprises a frame or harness such as shown, which is iitted to the person, like a corset, and fastened by stays l in front. Ribbons 2, 3, 4, 6, l0, ll and 12, having been properly adjusted on the person, serve to indicate the propervplaces for the seams. The office of ribbons 13 and 14 is merely that of stays to retain the seam-ribbons to their respective places. Adjustment is made correct by keeping the back elastic ribbon 2 straight up the back and the side elastic ribbons 3 straight under the arm of the waist.` The ribbons 4 are placed over the dart-seams,
and can be shortened or lengthened to suit the person by drawing the respective elastic ribbons through the buckles or latchets 5.
6 isawaist-ribbon, which is tightly fastened around the wearers waist. A thin piece of cloth or gauze is then fastened to the ribbons on the back and under the arm and front side of the shoulder by pins. Then the leather tabs 7 are spread equally, being one-half an inch to the left of the middle seam and reaching one-half an inch to the right of the under armseam.
8 represents leather straps marked with numerals for waists of persons of diverse girths.
'saine ribbon is marked, giving the dart.
Care must be taken to smooth the gauze,
after which the gauze pieces 9 are applied to on the inside ribbon, allowing the said gauze to reach to the top of the shoulder, after which it is smoothed from the front to under the arm across the top of the darts, then down to the waist. rlhe round of thebust gives the darts. The loose gauze is then divided for the darts equally and pinned to the under ribbon. The said gauze is then smoothed to the front and the gauze over the outer ribbon marked over, then smoothed back, and the place over the The back dart is marked in the same manner. The lower part of the dart will be sloped by the upper part. The gauze is then smoothed to the top of the shoulder and pinned to the .under ribbon on the back part of the shoulder and the place in the gauze over the outer ribbin is marked. The gauze is smoothed around the neck and the place over the outer ribbon marked. If taken over thick clothing, the sewing is done inside of the trace or marking. A sleeve may be laid olf on the same system or principle.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The dress-makers harness or fitting-frame, which consists of the combination of front stays l, means for fastening the frame about the person of the wearer, back elastic ribbon 2, dart-seam ribbons 4, side elastic ribbons 3, waist-ribbon 6, latchets or buckles 5, leather tabs 7, and measuring-straps 8, substantially as and for the purposes set fort-h.
