BEDSTEAD-SLAT LOCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,178, dated August 26, 1890. Application filed April 2, 1890. 7 Serial No. 346,296. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that LDOSIEE Lower HARTS- FIELD, acitizen of the United States, residing at Hope, in the county of I-Iempstead and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead-Slat Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has relation to bed-slat locks; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the lock, showing the position of the dovetail projections when there is no pressure on the slat. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the lock, showingthe position of the dovetail projections when the slat D is sagged in the middle. Fig. 3 is a side view of a part of a bed-rail and of a slat-bar F, having secured in one of its slat-seats the rail-plate A. Fig. 4 is a top edge view of the same rail-plate. Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the slat-sleeve B. Fig. 6 is an edge view of Fig. 5.

My invention is described as follows:

I make a rail-plate A just to fit in one of the seats a of the slat-rail F, so that there need be no cutting or sawing in order to put it in position. Said plate is provided with dovetail mortises a, which are continued into a further mortise (0*, having straight sides. I also make a slat-sleeve B, that fits on the ends of the slats. Said sleeve consists in a top plate I) and an end plate 1), side plates b and a bottom cross-bar b and extending from the top plate 1) and end plate I) aretwo dovetail projections 0, provided with the necks c. Said rail-plate A and slat-sleeveB are provided with countersunk screw-holes, so that they may be securely fastened to the bed rails and slats. All the parts of said sleeve may be integral, and the sleeve may be awcasting. Enough of the bottom part of the dovetail projections O are cut away, so that when fitted in the dovetail mortises a the upper surface of the sleeved slats are on an exact line with the slats which are not provided with the said sleeves. It will be seen by reference to Fig. 1 that the dovetail projections O fit out against the outer walls of the mortiscs a In said Fig. 1 the slat D is represented as being straight, while in Fig. 2 the dovetail projections O are drawn inwardly until their dovetail inclines fit against the dovetail inclines of the plate A. The rail D, Fig. 2, is represented as being sagged.

Thus the double purpose of my invention is and D to spring and give, thus making an easy bed, while if said lock did not have the" necks c and the mortised extensions a the locked slats would be ridged, making thebed uncomfortable.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with abed-rail and slatbar, the slat-lock consisting of the slat-plate A, having the dovetail mortises a and straight extensions 0, the sleeve B, consisting of the upper plate b, end plate I), side plates b and cross-bar b and the dovetail extensions G, provided with the neck 0, sub stantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination, with the bed-rail and slat-bar, of a slat-plate A, provided wit-h dovetail mortise a, having straight extensions a and sleeve B, provided with a straight neck 0, terminating in the dovetail extension 0, adapted to work in the dovetail mortise of the plate A and extensiono substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
