The numeral 1 indicates a portion of an ordinary chase and the numeral 2 indicates a portion of a form, consisting of printers type, not shown, and furniture, locked within the chase by means of the improved quoin.
Referring to the improved quoin, the numeral 3 indicates a cam mounted for a limited rotary movement in a horizontal plane within a support consisting of a top bar 4 and a bottom bar 5. The top bar 4 is considerably thicker than the bottom bar 5 and is placed upon the bottom bar 5 and detachably secured thereto by means of machine screws 6 loosely seated in the bar 4 with their heads countersunk therein, and having screw-threaded engagement at their lower ends with the bar 5. The cam 3 works within a seat 7 formed in and extending transversely through the under intermediate side of the bar 4 and is provided with a plurality of ratchet teeth 8, and a vertical hub 9 which extends on both sides of the cam 3. At its lower end, the hub 9 is loosely mounted in a depressed bearing seat 10 formed in the upper surface of the bar 5, and the upper end of the hub 9 is loosely mounted in a bearing seat 11 formed in the bar 4 which extends completely through the same. The top of the hub 9 lies flush with the upper surface at the top bar 4 and is provided with an angular key seat 12 which, preferably, extends nearly but not quite the Detachably mounted in the key seat 12 is a cam operating key 13 provided with a square shank 14 which closely fits within the key seat 12.
Means for locking the cam 3 in various set positions is provided in the form of a sliding lock pawl 15, for engagement with the ratchet teeth 8 of the cam 8. The look pawl 15 is provided with a rearwardly eX- tended rack bar 16 which, together with the lock pawl 15 is mounted to slide upon the upper face of the bar 5 within an inverted T-shaped seat 17 formed in the under surface of the bar 4. This seat 17 is provided with an intermediate portion which extends upward through the top of the bar 4 and within which is mounted a segmental pinion 19 that meshes with the teeth of the rack bar 16, for moving the lock pawl 15 into and out of engagement with the ratchet teeth 8. The pinion 19 is loosely mounted on a horizontally extended bearing pin 20, the ends of which are mounted in the bar 4 on opposite sides of the seat 18. An operating arm 21 is integrally formed with, or otherwise rigidly secured, to the segmental pinion 19 and is adapted to be seated, when the lock pawl 15 is in engagement with the ratchet teeth 8, in a seat 22 formed in the upper surface of the bar 4 and extending from the seat 18 to the adjacent end of the bar 4. Said seat 22 is of such depth as to permit the upper surface of the arm 21 to lie flush Figs. 6, 7 and 8, the pawl 15 is provided with a rearwardly inverted T-shaped extension 24 mounted for sliding movement together with the pawl 15 upon the upper surface of the bar 5 and within a correspondingly shaped seat 25 formed in the under surface of the bar 4. An upwardly projecting threaded stud 26 is secured to the extension 24: and works through a slot 27 extending from the upper surface of the seat 25 through the bar 5 to an open seat 28 formed in the bar 5 and within which works a thumb nut 29 having threaded engagement with the upwardly projecting ends of the stud 26. As is evident, by tightening the thumb nut 29 on the stud 26, the extension 24 is frictionally held in the seat 25 for locking the pawl 15 in engagement with the ratchet teeth 8 of the cam 3. For the purpose of illustrating the above invention, only one printers quoin has been shown in the drawings, but in actual practice, it will ordinarily take several of the devices to properly lock the form within the chase.
What I claim is:
1. In a printers quoin, the combination with a support comprising a pair of detachably connected plates, of a cam mounted between said plates and having hubs rotatively mounted therein, one of said hubs projecting through the plate in which it is mounted and provided with a key seat, a sliding lock bar mounted for toothed engagement with said cam, and means for positively locking said lock bar in an operative position, substantially as described.
2. In a printers quoin, the combination with a support comprising a pair of de tachably connected plates, and a clamping member having laterally projecting lugs arranged to embrace the ends of said plates, of a cam mounted between said plates for action on said clamping member and having hubs rotatively mounted in said plates, one of said hubs projecting through the plate in which it is mounted and provided with a key seat, a sliding lock bar mounted for toothed engagement with said cam, and means for positively locking said lock bar in an operative position, substantially as described.
