UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK J. BLUM, OF DANSF'ILLE, NEW YORK.
MANUFACTURE OF SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,975, dated August 26,, 1890.
Application filed May 9, 1889- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK J. BLUM, of Dansville, in the county of Livingston, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Method of Manufacturing Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, and tothe figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to an improved method of manufacturing that class of shoes in which the upperis formed of braided, knitted, woven, or felted fibrous material, and constitutes in itself a complete foot-covering, and is provided with a lining of fleece, wool, felt, cloth, or other like material, an inside counter or heel-stiffener, and an outer sole of felt, leather, or analogous material.
My said improved method is as follows: After the upper has been formed and turned inside out I make a slit in the bottom of the same at the heel sufficiently large to permit the passage of the counter or stiffener and then apply the lining of wool or other material and quilt it or otherwise secure it to the upper except at the heel portion left for the insertion of the counter or stiffener. I then turn the upper right side out and insert the counter or heel-stiffener through the slit in the upper and between said upper and lining, and then secure the lining to the counter by paste, cement, or otherwise. I then apply the outer sole of leather, felt, or other material and fasten the upper, counter, and sole together by nails, stitching, or otherwise. By this method of procedure shoes of this character can be made rapidly and at minimum cost.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the upper Serial No. 310,116. (No model.)
turned inside out and slitted; Fig. 2, a similar View of the same with the lining applied thereto. Fig. 3 represents the lined upper turned and ready to receive the counter, the dotted lines representing the portion occupied by the counter when inserted and in place. Fig. 4 is a view of the counter. Fig. 5 is a view of the completed shoe; Fig. 6, a sectional view through the completed shoe, taken on the line as m, Fig.5.
Similar numbers of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
1 indicates the upper; 2, the slit therein; 3, the lining; 4., the stitching connecting the lining to the upper; 5, the counter; 6, the cement by which the counter and lining are secured together; 7, the outersole; 8, the heel, and 9 the nails by which the heel, sole proper, lining, and counter are all fastcued. together.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described method of manufacturing shoes having uppers which in themselves form complete foot-coverings, consisting in turning the upper inside out, slitting the bottom of the same at the heel portion, applying the lining and securing it to the upper except at the heel portion where the upper and lining are left apart for the accommodation of the counter or heel-stiffener, then inserting the stiffener through the slit in the upper and between the latter and the lining, securing the lining to said counter, applying the outer sole, and fastening the outer sole, counter, and upper together, substantially as set forth.
FRANK J.- BLUM.
