BUTTERLMOLDE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,813, dated August 19, 1890. Application filed June 9 1890. Serial No. 354,739. (llo model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE TITUS, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Pomeroy, in the county of Meigs and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Shipping-Package and Mold for Butter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and

exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in butter molds and shipping-packages combined;'and it has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient device wherein butter may be packed and shipped, and from which the contents" may be readily removed.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure l is a perspective View of my improved receptacle. Fig. 2 is a like view bottom side up. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section through the same.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the Views.

Referring now to the details of the drawin gs by letter, A designates a receptacle,which maybe of glass, wood, metal, or any other preferred material, in the shape of a box, jar, or can, smaller at the bottom than at the top, either round, square, elliptical, or, octagonal, as preferred, although in the drawings I have shownit as substantially square, as that is the form in which I propose to make it ordinarily. This receptacle is formed upon its interior near the bottom with a ledge or flange a, as shown in Fig.- 3, on which is designed to rest the removable bottom, the upper face of which is designed to be made to form a mold to give a fancy appearance to the butter. (See Fig. 3.) This bottom closes firmly the opening in the bottom of the receptacle, having tapered walls to conform to the taper of the walls of the receptacle, as shown in said Fig. 3. A packing-ring I) should be provided between the said bottom and the flange or ledge upon which it rests. From the under side of this bottom projects a bar 13, having a slot 0, into which is designed to be engaged the crank portion 01 of a locking-bar D, the ends of which rest upon the bottom or lower edges of the receptacle, or upon a ledge f, formed by the shoulder g, as shown in Fig. 2, so that said ends will be within the space formed by said shoulder out of cont-act with the ground or other support of the receptacle.

. Upon the outside of the receptacle near the upper edge there is formed a projecting rib h, and above this there is a groove or cavity j, upon which is designed to be supported a packing-ring Z, as seen in Fig. 3.

E is the cover, formed with a surrounding rabbet k to engage the upper edge of the walls of the receptacle, as shown in Fig. 3.

F is a locking hook or wire having its ends bent at right angles, as shown best in Fig. 3, and engaged in recesses m on the under side of the projecting rib of the receptacle, as shown in Fig. 2, the horizontal portion of this look or hook being engaged with the crossbar F on the top of the cover, which bar is inclined from the ends toward the center to form a sort of cam, as seen best in Fig. 1.

The receptacle may be formed of any desired size-to hold, say, one, two, three, six, or more pounds. It is to be packed from the inside, and when it is desired to unpack it all that is necessary to do is to remove the hook at the top and the locking-wire at the bottom, then stand it upon its larger end, and press inward upon the bottom 0. When the butter is removed, it will have the design of the mold or inner face of the removable bottom impressed thereupom What I claim as new is 1. The combination, with the receptacle formed with tapered walls and interior flange near the bottom, of the removable bottom fitted within the receptacle and provided with a slotted bar upon its under side, and the lockingbar having a crank portion en- IO gaging said slot, and the ends resting upon said shoulder and thus held above the lower edge of the surrounding walls of the receptacle, substantially as shown and described.
