0. PEDERSON. TARGET.
1104343522. j I Patented Aug. 19. 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLE PEDERSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TARGET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,522, dated August 19, 1890.
Application filed November 29,1889. Serial No. 331,922. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLE PEDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Targets, of which the following is a full and clear description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents the face of my target with the plates in position to receive the projectiles. Fig. 2 is a section of the same through the line 00 x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the face of the target after all the plates have been struck. Fig. 4 is a section through the line yg of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail to be referred to.
My present invention relates to that class of targets which are used in connection with toy pistols, and more particularly that class of toy pistols which discharge rubber projectiles, and in which numbers are exposed by the plates changing position whenever they are struck by the projectiles.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same and indicate the manner in which I carry it out.
In the drawings, A represents a targetboard of any desired shape or size provided with the perforations a, and immediately above each perforation a partial perforation a, for a purpose hereinafter explained. The plates B are rigidly attached near one edge to the rods b, which rods are passed through the perforations a, in which they have aloose play, and on the opposite side of the board A these rods are bent back on themselves, so as to allow the ends of the rods to enter the partial perforations a, as shown in Fig. 2.
The manner of attaching the plate and bending the rod is clearly shown in Fig. 5.
When the plates are in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it is evident that if a plate should be struck and be driven up to the board A the bent end of the rod would at the same time be driven out of the partial perforation cd, and the necessary result would be the rod I) would turn in the perforation a and allow the plate B to drop to a lower position, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
On the face of the target are placed figures indicating any desired numbers, or animals and birds may be represented, and these figures or animals are hidden from View by the plates B when the target is arranged for use, as shown in Fig. 1; but as each plate is struck by the projectile it is caused to drop below and expose the figure which had been concealed behind it, as shown in Fig. 3.
The target may be of any desired size and any number of plates may be used, so as to give a variety of numbers, birds, and animals for the amusement of the youthful gamester or hunter armed with his toy pistol.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. 1. A target consisting of a board having perforations a made through it and other perforations a, extending partially through said board, a series of plates having rods extending through the perforations a, and having bent ends adapted to be fitted into the partial perforations a, substantially as described.
2. A target consisting of a board provided with perforations extending partially through it from the rear side, in combination with a series of plates having rods journaled in said board and provided with bent ends adapted to be fitted into the partial perforations and to be released therefrom when the plates are struck up, substantially as described.
OLE PEDERSON. Witnesses:
H. B. RoUsE, F. O. MERCER.
