DIE FOR COMPRESSING SOAP AROUND AN ANCHOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,031, dated August 12, 1890.-

Applicetion led August 23, 1889. Serial No. 321,755. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, FREELAND W. OSTROM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Compressing Soap Around an Anchor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has reference to the construction of dies for use in compressing soap around a suitable anchor, the latter being provided with an eye which extends laterally beyond the cake of soap, whereby the soap may be attached to a chain, string, or the like as a precaution against theft, loss, dsc.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation showing my vdies in operative position, a cake of soap lying upon the lower die preparatory to being compressed; Fig. 2, a similar View showing the soap compressed between the dies; Fig. 3, a plan of the die-box within which the dies are operated; Fig. et, a perspective showing the relative position of the dies prior to'their operation, and also the contour of their faces; Fig. 5, a sectional elevation of my invention, showing an auxiliary guide for the anchoreyes, both dies being provided with fins adapted to travel within the eye-guide; Fig. a detail perspective of the auxiliary eyeguide, and Fig. 7 a detail perspective of the die-box. A is the upper die, of any suitable shape and secured, as by a set-screw B, tot-he ordinary plunger C. i

D is the die-box mounted on a bed E and having a vertical groove F.

G is the lower die within said box, and H is the usual drive-rod beneath said die, and by means of which the latter may be elevated Within the box.

In preparing the soap for compression between the dies the anchor I is thrust through the soap cake, so that the hook or eye J projects beyond said cake, the soap being of course in a green and plastic state. A cake of soap `hns provided with an anchor is placed upon the lower die with the anchoreye extending in a vertical plane within the groove F, as is clearly shown at Fig. l. The dies are now operated by the ordinary powerpress mechanism (not shown) to compress the soap within the die-box, as shown at Fig. 2. Vhile the soap is being carried by the dies the eye .I will travel unobstructed within the groove F.

In Fig. 7 I have shown the groove in the die-box chamfered at the top, in order to insure the free passage of the anchor-eye within the groove; but both this chamfering and the auxiliary guide are precautionary and decidedly not essential, and I do not therefore wish to be limited or circumscribed thereby.

y The dies may be provided with iins L, extending within the groove F, for the purpose of affording cleaners for said groove, as shown at Fig. 5.

Of course the shape of the dies and box is immaterial, and may be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention, the

gist of which resides in the broad idea of two compressingdies operating within a die-box, said box or dies being` notched or recessed to accommodate the anchor-eye.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The herein-described means for compressing soap around an internal anchor having an eye projecting outwardly from the soap, the same consisting of a lower and upper die, and a die-box within which said dies are operated, said box having a vertical longitudinal recess to accommodate the anchor-eye during the compression and vertical movement of the soap cake between said dies, substantially as shown and set forth.
