Said frame provided with the usual guides for positively operating means is a cam posithe vertically movable head B, said frame tioned within a slot provided in a rest block being provided, also, with the fixed headbelow the mold or die, with which cam conblock C and with suitable bearings for the tacts the lower end of a stem 0n the lower drive shaft D, countershaft D and crankpressure member. Said movable head B carries the mold or die F, the feedmechanism, and the se eral parts associated therewith. In contradistinction; to some prior machines, the mold F of my machine is a solid block of metal with no moving parts. The mold block is provided with a mold cavity f the shape, of which conforms to the shape of thei'heel and the dimensions of which mold cavity are only slightly greaterthan the .di-

K designates the pressure member which is positioned and operates within themold cavity, and L is the; relatively stationary pressure member which is supportedin a fixed position on the under side of head C so as to occupy a cooperative relation to member and the mold when the heel is under compression. The pressure members K L conform, substantially, to the shape and dimensions of theheelto'be compressed between the opposing-surfacesof said members; As shown member L is attached to or formed with a shank, Z, dovetailed in cross section, and detachahly mounted in aguide, Z, provided onthe under side ofthe'head (1 If desired, liners (not shown) may-be employedjn connection with saidpressure members, or either of 'them, to regulate ,the" i 1 heel, it being preferred touse one or more liners; in connection with the fixed pressure me b r L; v a I pressure membef K is provided; with a; de en i st l ela e ,be n' Sh w as partly cut away on the respective sides in Fig, 8, said stem "extending downwardly from the die through the vertical aperturelz compressed heel substantially "flush with the top surface of the mold in order that'the crate-to eject the compressed heel into .a dish r e .ehut ,.S.e d;. ute. s. h wn, a e u' nai n i c i d p si en a the .k e of the machine, the inlet of which chute is ns'he f d by e fe sl d w l e pressure: 11 m; the
on said 7 pulley H adjacent the top face of the mold, at the rear thereof see Figs. 1 and 4:, so that the compressed heels ejected from the mold will pass directly into the chute.
I will now describe the feed mechanism for supplying the heels to the mold or die, one of said heels prior to compression being shown at X in Fig. 10, by reference to which it will be noted that it embodies a plurality of layers each of which is out to the desired form and size, said layers being assembled in matching relation and superposed, suitable means being employed for uniting the layers, as by cementing them or by mechanically fastening them through the medium of a tack. Said feed mechanism includes, as one element thereof, a slide 0, provided on its under side with a rib 0, said slide resting upon a supporting guide way P, herein shown as a horizontal plate occupying a xed relation to the mold F so as to rise and fall therewith. The plate P extends outwardly from the mold, and said plate is held in fixed relation to said mold by the angle bars Q and by a brace bar Q, the latter being inclined to the guide plate P, see Fig. l so that the brace bar is secured at one end to the rest block H and at the other end to the guide plate P. Said guide plate is shown as provided with a longitudinal slot 79, in which is fitted the rib 0 of the feed slide 0, the latter being thus connected with the guide plate so as to be directed or limited to movement in a rectilinear path.
The angle bars Q each comprise a piece of metal, of angle shape in cross section, said bars being parallel to each other and positioned upon the guide plate P to extend therefrom over the mold at the respective sides of the cavity 7 therein. These bars are secured firmly to the guide plate P by screws g, and at their free ends they are fastened by screws 9" to the top of the die. The slide 0 travels between the opposing edges of the guide bars, and when. the slide is drawn forward the operator should deposit an unpressed heel between the bars Q and against the edge of said slide 0, see Fig. 3, whereby the movement of the slide toward the mold acts upon the heel to shove it over the plate P and between the bars so as to feed the heel accurately into position over the mold cavity, whereby the heel is directed to rest upon the pressure member K in the operation of the compressing mechanism.
The feed slide is operated automatically by mechanism dependent upon the rise and fall of the head B, and to this end I have provided a double pulley S, the latter being mounted for idle rotation on a stub shaft or arbor s, secured to the rest block H, see Fig. On this pulley is coiled or wound two chains T, T, the chain T being coiled in one direction on one part of the pulley and extending upwardly to the fixed head so as to be anchored by an eye bolt 15, see Fig. 2, whereas the other chain T is coiled in a reverse direction to chain T and on the other member of the pulley, said chain extending forwardly to the front end of slide 0, whereby said chain T can be attached to a stud t of the slide. The chains and the pulley cooperate in imparting movement in one direction to the feed slide, but the movement of the slide in an opposite direction is effected by a drop weight U, to which a cord or chain it is attached, the latter extending over a pulley it mounted upon the outer end of fixed plate P and Said cord or chain being fastened to the outer end of feed slide O at 00.
The operation is as follows: A. heel having been previously positioned on the pres sure block K, the upward movement of head B operates through chain J to turn shaft 1 and cam I so as to lower block K and the heel therein within the mold, and as the head 13 and mold reach the limit of their upward travel, the heel is compressed between within the mold and between the cooperating pressure blocks K L. At this time, the feed slide 0 is drawn outward by the drop weight. Upon the descent of the head the mold and the other parts, the cam 1 acts on the stem of the block K to retain the compressed heel in a raised position substantially flush with the top surface of the mold. At this time, an unpressed heel on the plate P and in the rear of the slide 0, whereupon the chain T and pulley S act to pull. on chain T and draw the slide 0 rearwardly against the pull of weight V, as a result of which the unpressed heel is forced by the slide 0 between the guide bars Q, so that the pressed heel will be forced off the block K, and away from the mold, into the chute M and simultaneously therewith the unpressed heel, advanced by the feed slide O, will take position on the pressure block K, the incoming heel contacting with the compressed heel and operating to displace it as described. The head now rises and the cam lowers the heel into the mold so as to compress it as described, the feed slide in the meanwhile being drawn outwardly by the drop weight, so as to continue the operations of pressing the heel and to therefore feed an unpressed heel to the mold in a manner to eject the compressed heel.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a heel compressing machine, the combination with a reciprocating head, and a mold thereon, of a pressure member positioned within the mold, a cam shaft movable with said head, a rotative cam carried by said shaft for directly actuating the pressure member so as to impart movement the attendant places I anchored so as to impa imparting movement in an fun.
