as shown in Fig. l. i' l On the outer end of shaft B there is keyed a wheel, J, having a notch, l, infits periphery, 'and K is a spring attached to one of the up rights b, and havingits free or disengaged end g bearing against the periphery of wheel J. i L- represents a mold or female die, corn; posed of two parts, Z l', one part, l, being fixed or stationary, and the other part, l', being al'- i is operated by a toggle, M, the joint of which is connected atits lower end to alever, O, one end of which is secured by a joint, m, to one of the legs or supports a of the hed, and the other end connected by a joint to the lower end of vertical rod P, which passes up through a guide, n, attached to one of the uprights b. By raising the rod P the toggle M will be actuated to draw back the movable part Z' of the.moldorfemale die `L, asshown Ain-redl in` Fig. l.
I The die L receives the auger to be operated upon'. The twist is given to the auger, and its end on which the head or cutting portion is to be swaged or formed is struck up in proper shape prior to the auger being tt'ed in the die L, between the two parts Z l thereof, andftheseparts are formed with a female screw, which grasps the screw formedl by the twist rof the auger, and when the part l is closed against the part l the auger is retained rmly in position, the end o of the auger above its twist being in a cylindrical part-of the mold or die L. (See Fig.`2`.)

Each ot" the pieces ZZ has a projection ZX, which, forming part of the mold, projects into its fellow-piece, so as to make the formingthread continuous. Were the projection ZX to be attached in the other die, into which it projects, it would cause that portion of the mold so far to inclose the twist of the auger as to prevent its withdrawal; but by causing each section of the die to include a portion of its counterpart the projecting portion is withdrawn and permits the auger to be raised from its bed.
The headingdie D may be described as formed of a cylinder equal in diameter to the interior of the upper part of the mold L, in which it works, provided with a central hole, p, to receive the pintle r of the auger-head, and having a recess, s, at opposite points in its side, to form the spurs t t of the auger-head, and having its face recessed, as shown at u u, to form projecting edges or floor-lips 'u o, tangential with the pintle, on which cutting-edges are formed to take out, when the auger is at work, the wood within the circular cut made by the lips tt. (See Figs. 3 and 4.)
The operation is as follows: The wheel E, during the operation of the machine, has a continuous rotary motion, and the operator, by raising the rod D, throws back the part L of the die L, and then inserts an auger between the parts ll', the auger being properly heated. Ihe rod D is then shoved down and the part l closed against the part t, the auger being firmly secured within the mold or die. The lever I is then actuated so that the rod H will bear against the wheel F, and move it toward the wheel E, until one of the pins g of said wheel will come in contact with the projection i of the wheel F, when the latter is turned, and with it the shaft B, and the rod C forced down, and consequently the heading-die D, the latter acting upon the au ger and forming or swaging the head thereon.
rJhe work is done with one revolution only of shaft B, the beveled end of the projection fi, at the termination of the revolution of wheel F, coming in contact with the inclined lip ctx, which causes the wheel F to be moved from wheel E, and its projection i thrown out of the reach of the pins g of E, thc pin j of wheel F coming in contact with a shoulder, bx, on
the cross-piece c, to prevent a farther movement of F, by its momentum, and the spring K engaging with the notch l, to prevent any backlash or back movement of the shaft B. The rod P is then raised andthe die L opened, the auger removed, and another one placed in the die, the latter closed, and the lever I actuated to throw the Wheel F toward the drivingwheel E, the pins ggof which come in contact with the projection i of wheel F, and the succeeding auger is headed as the previous one.
By this device angers may be headed or have their cutting-edges formed on them with great rapidity and in a perfect manner. There is no welding of parts together to form the cutting-edges of the head, the latter being swaged from a single piece of metal which forms the end of the screw or twist of the auger.
I do not contine myself to any particular form or pattern for the head of the auger, the shape of the end of the plunger and of the upper cross-piece of the female die varying according to the style and form of auger required.
I do not claim the principles of swaging as in bolt heads, nails, and spikes, but

The operating of the heading-die by the rotating shaft B, through the medium of the loose driving-wheel E, provided with the pins g, the sliding wheel F, placed on a' square shaft, B, and provided with the projection t', beveled at oneend, in connection with sliding rod H, and the fixed inclined lip a", all arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
2. The forming-die, consisting of the portions Z Z' D, constructed and operating substantially as described.
3. The combination of the heading-die D, mold or female die L, toggle M, and driving or operating mechanism, so arranged that the driving-shaft B may, at the will of the operator, be connected with and disconnected from the continually rotating driving-wheel E, substantially as described.
