KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS:
That I, AUBIN WOOD, of the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new und useful Improvements in Belt-Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming e part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a top or plan view.
Figure 2 represents a sido view.
Figure 3 represents u longitudinal central section on line A B, fig. 1.
Figure 4 represents a cross-section on lino C D,.iig. 1; and
Figure 5 represents upon un enlarged scale one of the dies, and the cams for operating the same, us'will be hereafter explained.
To enable those skilled in the art to' which my invention belongs to make and use`the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
In the drawings, the bed is lettered A, upon the upper side of the rear end of which is fitted to turn in n. suitable bearing or box, c, the main spindle B, having a hole, b, which extends 'through its entire length. Upon the middle of the spindle 13 is a screw-thread, e, upon which are screwed a ilangerl nut, O, and theA check-nut 'C'. D is o cam-ring, which works loose upon the spindle B. It has a liange, d, to which is fastened the flange-ring e, the lip 1 of which ts over and back of the'ilange 2 of nut C.
There are two notches eut in the fiange's cZ e, one on each side, for a purpose hereafter explained. The cam-ring D has a. slot,`3, running entirely around it, said slot being eut so as to form, in this instance, four cams h.
lIii is a ring, loose on the spindle B, 'having two, sets of horizontal slots c'ntV in its flange part, E', in one set of which are fastened the ends of two rear projecting arms 'z, having pins 4, which fit into the slot or camgroove 3 in cam-ring D, while in the other set are fastened the ends of the forwnrd-projecting dic-operating arms G. In this instance, four ure used. he dieoperating arms G work in grooves or slots cut ir the head B'. The cose F beingfastened to and turning with the head B', protects and covers the arms G on their outer sides. II are the cutting-dies, fitted to work back and forth in slots cut in the face of the head B. Each dio has a straight groove, 7, and o lip, 8, to fit into and lock with the groove 9 und lip 10 of cach locking-piece I, which lutter have inclined grooves 11 and lips 12 to lock with the grooves 13 und lips 14, on thefront ends of the die-operating arms G. When the pnrts are combined together they occupy tho relative positions indicated Vin figs. 3 and 4 of sheet 2 of the drawings.
In ig. 5, same sheet, the arm G, die I'I., and the looking-piece I are shown upon an enlarged scale. 'lhe arm G and die H are represented i'n their relativo positions, while the connecting-piece I is shown detached and 'turned around. It will he observed that the wedge part 15 of the part I fits in between the lips 8 :and 14 of thc parts II and G,`so that as the' arm G is moved'baek und forth, a reciprocating or buck-aud-forword motion will he imparted to the piece I anddie II, at right angles to the line of motion of the arms G.
The head B is slotted or out out to receive und hold the dies II aud connections I in their respectivo and proper positions as they are worked by the arms G, a face-platqK, being fastened to the front ofthe head B to prevent the dies and connection-pieces from working or dropping out in front. Holes lc nre cut in the face plate to admit of the `tapering ends 16 of the arms G to work through; also with a. central hole, 17, through which the end of the blank bolt can be passed to the cutting-dies.
Between und upon the ways 18 18 of the front of the frame A the carriage L is fitted to slide.` To the rear end ofthe carriage L is fastened u rack-bnr, L', into the cogs or teeth m` of which -mosh the teeth n 'of the gear M upon the shaft M', which has its bearings in the sides of frame A, nnd having upon one end, which projects through the sido of frame A, u friction-wheel, N, fastened.
Upon the top of the rack-bor L is fastened o. trough-piece, L", .which serves to hold the blank and thev cut bolts.
'for moving the other piece, so that when said wheel is moved in l by the extent ofthe disagreement between the marks or cuts above alluded to.
In the front ofthe cnr-ringe L aro tilted two vertical-sliding clamp-pieces O O, their ends working up and down in dove-tailed grooves in the sides ofthe carriage L. f
A hand-wheel, O', is fastened to the top of a screw-spindle, O", which passes ldown through the ends of both of the pieces O, tho thread on said spindle being cut` right-handed for inoving'onc piece, O, und left-handed one direction, the clamping-pieces O O will be moved fromeach other, while, whenxit is moved in the opposite' direetiomsnid pieces will be moved towards cae-h mother; said pieces heilig so lset that when drawn close together, they will meet upon a pinne on o. line with the axis or centro of motion of thcspindlc B. i
'lhc screw-spindle O" is heldin place, so that it cannot move longitudinally, by the stand Q fastenedito the top of one side of carriage L, and through which the spindle passes, avcoilar being fastened to spindle O'funder the stand. Through one side ofthe carriage L is inserted a rod, o, which can be adjusted back and forth, and then secured in place by the screwp. v
A. smalljournal or shaft, y, is inserted in the s ide of frame A, having attached to its inner end a. dog, s, while to its outer end is fastened the arm t, the long endI resting on the pin u, and the short end working up kunder the end, t', of lever P, which is pivoted at 20, and is also connected by the bent cross-connection P' to the sleeve P", which, in turn, is hinged by the swvel'I-clasp 21 to frame Within the sleeve P" is a loose rod or piston, 22,.,wl1ich'is free to slide back and forth in said sleeve.` l l j v y 'Ihe rear endy of the rod 22, when its sleci'e P". is turned in, as shown in iig. l, will be passed by the eem 23 upon the inner face of whe-cl 24, but when it is thrown out, as it is whenthe short end of levert is depressed so as to let spring w force lever P towards the spindle B or centre of the machine, cam 23 will strike it and force it back against a. spring-piston in the ense w', fastened to the side of carriage L. 'v
An arm or finger-piece, z, extends in from lever P, which is forced into the notches y in the flanges d Ae, when lever P is forced in es above described. There are two notches y in the flanges d c, oneon each side, one side of the notch being inclined andthe other square. i
Q is a device for holding the blank bolts while the thread is being cut. It is made with o. sloit, wide enough tio receive the head of the' bolt, while thc slot back of the head is extended sufficiently to admit of the fastening oi' the spring 25 to the piece Q', as indicated in fig. 3, for the purpose of pressing .up against the head of the bolt to keep it in place while being ruin' to the dies. i i i 'Ihe front part of the piece Q is sl'ettcd out to receive the body of the bolt, and support it in a central position. From the back of the piece Q' a. finger, Q", projects, and which finger is inserted and clasped between the jaws O .0.
When long bolts ure'to be cut, the body ofthe boltl can be run through betweenJ tho jaws O O, by which it can be held during the operation of cutting, the` holder Q', in such cases, being dispensed with: Rod o is used for determining the length of thread to becut upon the bolt. i l f i i As the dies weer, or when. putting in new ones, and it becomes rod of any particular size, check-nut is turned batik, and lthen' nut desired, until the dies II are moved to the proper position to eut the desired thread when check-nut C' is turned up. 'lo determine how much the dies have been moved in either -direction, after having been once adjusted, a. sl'ot, Si, is cut in thecnsc F, just over one of the die-operating arms, Gr, and u screw,r32, passed through `said slot, and screwed on to the arm Gr. e l
After the screw has been inserted, a. cut is made in the head, to correspond with the cut S3 in the case F, the eut being made when the pins 4 are in the front parts of groove 3. New, as arms Gare; movcdforward or back by the movement ofnut C, for thc rea-djustment of the dies, the extent of such movement will be indicated necessary to adjust them so as to admit a C 'turned forward or back, as' may be llhe dies may be made so as to dispense with the connections I, the die being mode longer,
shown in thc connection I eut in the die to receive the tongue of arm G. the connections for several reasons: First, the labor of making thc inclined grooves is more dllicult than making a simple straight groove; second, it would bo quitel diilicult or many workmen to'iit ythe parts so as to have them work easily, while the sume workmen would have no trouble in makingfthe die H with simply a' straight groove, 7; third, as the `dies wear out, itis much easier to' make them, as the connections were not used.
In cutting long bolts, the trough L" thread is being cut. kinds of bolts.
4The operation is as follows: v v 'l'he dies beiiigrun down tothe lowest point, and power being applied to give motion to the spindle B in the direction indicated by arrows, figs. 1 and 2, und the carriage L being run back, the operator inserts a blank bolt in the holder Q', then takes hold of lever It, which turns loosely on shaft M', and, bearing it down, produces sutlicient friction between the piece R', hinged to its short end, I(see g'. 2,) andthe rim of the wheel N, to`meve shaft M', thereby turning gear M, and which, acting upon `rack L', moves word. After lever R has been depressed, so that it strikes en pin 26, 2T to force it back for a new hol-'l on wheel N; the hinged piece R' turning on pivot 28, whereby n'o friction on wheel N is produced by thc backward motie ot"v the lever, and wheel N stands still until the lever is forced down again. By a repetition caught between' the dies H, when groove il,
answers an excellent purpose foi-'supporting the rear ends while the of such movements of lever It, the carriage L is" forward until the end of the blank is the cutting of the thread continues, andthe end of the bolt is drawn in by the action ofthe dies until u sufficient length of thread hss been cut upon the bolt, when tho rod o strikes against and the inclined I prefer, however, to use shown in 5, than it would be'i'f It will thus be seen that trough L" is a very useful and convenient device in cutting all' carriage L,'with the blank bolt, forthe operator turns it back, or allows spring.
tho dog or arm 5,`and dcprcsses the front endof lever t sulIlcicn-tly to allow the front end of bar P to' slip over it, whereby the finger n: enters one of the notches, y, and stops the'motiontof the cam-piece D, while the head B continuing to revolve, carries around with it the die-operatingarms G, ring E, and arms z', whereby, asthe lpins. 4 are forced into the rear part 34 of groove 3, ring F, together with the die-operating aruis G, is drawn back, and the connection-pieces I 'and dies II, drawn out so 'that the threads of the dies arch-eed from the threads cutin the bolt, by which' time' mm2-3 comes in contactwith the end of rod 22, driving it back suddenly against the spring-piston in the sliellcattaclicd to carriage L, which sudden action ,throws the carriage. back si'ziliently to draw the end ofthe bolt clear from the dies II.
As the head `I3 continues to revolve, pins -L are forced into the forward part .of groove 3 again, thereby forcing ring E andai-ms G forward, and the connections I and dies H in again to the proper positions to cut the thread on anotlicrtbolt, when the cam 29 on the case F, acting on the projection 30 on lever P, forces out the front end of the latter far enough to clear the linger a: from-the notch y in flanges d and e, and so that the short end of lever t can flyer rise up between the side of frame A and the frontend v of lever P, as indicated in fio'. I. t
The die-outtingapparatus is now ready for another blank to be fed in, and will romain and revolve-,in this conditionfineluding the com D, until anotheris'fed in, when the operation above described will be repeated.
It will -be observd'thnt after the operat has-put in' the blank and moved carriage L forward far enough to have the dies catch the end of -the blank, lno further attention is necessary until after the bolt is eut and carriage L run back, as above described. Further, that the `dies are run out to clear the threadsof the bolt, and then run b aclt again after-'thc bolt has been withdrawn to thcproper-positionsto cut the thread on 'the next blank by mechanism, which operates automatically, so that one attendant can run two or three of my improved machines nearly or quite as easily as one of the bolt-cuttersin commonuse. v Still, again, itwill bonotioed that the arrangement for feeding the carriage forwardgto enter the end of the blank between the dies is such that the operation does not require much labor, while there is no lateral straining or twistingof thecarriago, which is apt to interfere with the proper and correct entering of the end of the blank between the dies. If preferred in any case, thetbolts may be. run in and the dies renover the thrcad'a'second time, as indicated in the drawings.` As a general rule, the thread will be completed by the irst operation. i
