Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. GARDNER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED POCKET-KNIFE.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,398, dated July 5, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H'. GARDNER, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Pocket-Knife; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a side View of my improved pocket-knife, showing the knife-blade open. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same in a closed condition. Fig. 3 illustrates the appurtenances of the knife in an open condition.
Similar letters ot' reference'indicate corre sponding parts in the several gures.
This invention consists in a device having combined within it, in a novel way, several imtruments of extensive use which are of great importance to the soldier and sportsman, inasmuch as these instruments are almost indispensable when a gun or pistol is to be taken to pieces, cleaned, or repaired.
In order that others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may be enabled to fully understand and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, C C may represent the side pieces composing the handle of a knife, which in the present instance is formed of malleable iron, and in one piece with the back-spring F, which may be fired or tempered and burnished after the casting. The spring F is bent down between the sides C and C', and is secured to its place by the rivet e. The handle is also cast at its larger nd with a cavity, D, which constitutes a wrench, and with a boss or protuberant part, G, which is adapted to perform the requirements of a hammer.
B represents the blade, and E a screwdriver, both of which are mounted and adapted to open and shut on the pivot a, the spring F serving to brace the screw-driver E, as Well as the blade B. f
M may represent a conc picin'which is secured to the side piece, C, by m a :s of a pivot, b, upon which it may be readily turned, open for use, to the position shown in Fig. 3.
By making the handle of malleable iron the pins a, b, and e have very fr n bearings, and are adapted to remain in a sterre condition for a great length of time.
The above article fulfills all the requirements of a pocket-knit`ea wrench, a hammer, a screw-driver, and a cone-pick 5 and the merit ot' my invention consists in so combining the four instruments last enumerated that they wi 1 add scarcely anything to the bulk and cost ot' a knife, while being employed in connection with the same, and all-will be capable of performing their respective functions as effectually as if they constituted several distinct or separate tools.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new artiacle of manufacture, the pocketknit'e constructed as herein described. i
GEORGE H. GARDNER.
