UNITED STATES PATENT i OFFICE.
FERDINAND O. HORSTMANN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR -TO IIIMSELF AND VALTER IIORSTMANN, OF SAME PLACE.
MAsQUE-RADE-Sulr.
v SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 433,732, dated August 5, 1890.
Application led January 22, 1890. Serial No. 337,713. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND ODEN HORSTMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have 5 invented a certain Improved Masquerade- Suit, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce for the use of secret societies, masqueraders, and others a knit suit having the representa` ro tion of a skeleton thereon, as fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which the ligure represents the suit with the representation of a skeleton thereon. V
r 5 The suit of knit goods is originally of a light color, white or gray being the natural f color of the yarn, and the outline of the skeleton is produced by blocking out the form of the skeleton on the fabric and saturating the 2o fabric surrounding the blocked-out portion With a suitable dark dyeing solution, so that this surrounding portion will be of a dark color, preferably black, which, when the suit is worn in the dark, will be indistinctand the z 5 light portion represent in strong lines the form of a skeleton.
I have shown in the drawing the suitincas ing the feet. The hands may also be incased as Well; but I prefer to make the suit with the 3o arm portions extending only to the Wrist, exposing the wearers hands, which may be incased in gloves.
In some cases the leg portions may only extend to theankles; but I prefer to incase the feet, as shown. 3 5
To complete the representation of a skeleton, the wearer incases his head in a representation of a skull. i.
In some instances the design may be produced upon the back of the garment as Well 4o as the front, in this case showingthe rear View of the skeleton.
By the above means I am enabled to produce a suitthat Will be comfortable to the wearer, and the constant use of which Will not 45 in any Way aect the durability of `the representation of the skeleton other than that due to the Wear of the fabric. 4
The shade lines on the skeleton itself to bring out the contour of the bones can beV pro- 5o duced by tint-dyeing.
I claim as my inventionM As a new rarticle of manufacture, a knit-- goods suit having thereon the representation of a skeleton in the natural color of the Wool 55 from which the suit is made, the surrounding portion of the suit outlining the skeleton being dyed a dark color, substantially as and in the manner set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 6o name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
FERDINAND O. I-IORSTMANN.
