Description

J. GAVE. Knit Vests or Jackets for. Female Wear.
Patented April 1, 1879v um. mummy. wuuumon. ofc.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES GAVE, OF OATON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN KN'IT VESTS OR JACKETS FOR FEMALE WEAR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,808, dated April 1, 1879; application tiled Decembel` 20, 1878.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES CAVE, of Ganton, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Knit Vests or Jackets for Female Wear, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a' front elevation of a ladies knit vest or jacket made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line .fr .c of Fig. 1.
This invention consists in a knit vest or jacket designed for female wear, having an open-work front, through which the color of the dress or garment beneath can be seen, thus rendering the article more ornamental, and a closely-knit ribbed or plain back, which affords warmth and protection to the portion of the body covered thereby, an exceedingly comfortable and useful as well as ornamental garment being thereby produced.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A represents a ladies7 knit vest or jacket, formed of woolen ylirn of any desired color or colors. This jacket, which is made by. the well-known hand-frame machines, is composed of an ornamental openwork front, b, which is knit on one machine and a closely-knit ribbed or plain back, c, which is made on another machine, the mechanism of each machine being adapted to produce the required stitch. The two separate portions 11 c are then united along the lines of the seams d by-hand stitching or crocheting, after which an ornamental crocheted or knit trimming or border, c, of any desired color or colors, is attached to the edges of the article in front and at the neck and bottom, and also around the arm-holes f, by stitching or crocheting, in order to give ita neat and finished appearance. The portion of the trimming c in front is provided with button-holes to receive the buttons g, by which the garment is closed.
The jacket may be made with or without sleeves, as preferred, and its style or shape varied to accord with the prevailing fashion. When the jacket is stretched upon the body of the wearer, the color of the dress or garment underneath will be seen through the openings 5 of the front portion, b, and a contrast can thus be produced which will add lo the beauty of the jacket and give it a unique and striking appearance, while the closelyknit rear portion, c, will protect the back ot' the wearer and render the jacket warm and comfortable.
The design of the ornamental open-work front b may be changed at pleasure, and the thickness of the back and front may also be varied to suit the requirements of the case.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a knit vest or jacket for female Wear, composed of an ornamental open-work front portion, b, through which the color of the garment beneath can be seen, a closely-knit ribbed or plain back, c, the two portions b cmade separately and united, and the border e attached to the bottom, front, neck, and around the arm-holes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Witness my hand this 14th day of December, A. D. 1878.
JAMES CAVE.
In presence of P. E. TEscHEMAoHER, W. J. CAMBRIDGE.
